Who observes Advent?

I love Advent, because I'm a beginning of Advent baby.

We have the wreath, the Nativity scene, waited till yesterday to start decorating or preparing, and will be reading from the Bible together every night. And I broke out the parang music (Trini pre-Christmas music.)

WileE-Dead 12-04-2006 12:47 PM

We have the wreath as well. In fact, this w/e I went & bought 4 packs of candles to stock up...lol The women at the store were laughing at me while I was checking out, until I told them what I was up to!

We also have the playmobil nativity set & Advent X-mas in the Park set 8)

I love traditions...new & old.

Kurlee 12-04-2006 02:42 PM

I do. In Sweden Advent is big. (The religion is Protestantic.) I have my electric candle thing in the window and a star in a nother window.
People lit candles too.

Kinda like these:

We did the wreath last night. We read a verse from the bible, then went around the table and each of us said something we were thankful for, and then went around and made a wish, with the only rule being that it couldn't be a wish for yourself. I was pleasantly touched by my kids' wishes.

Next Sunday we start rehearsals for the Christmas pageant.

LadyCurlyLocks 12-04-2006 08:11 PM

We do the advent wreath at church, and I also observe it at home. Though at church we began last Sun., I guess because of the way the Sundays fell... but I began my advent at home last night.

ETA: I usually make a wreath every year with branches I get at a local tree lot, and I already have the candles.

katethegreat 12-04-2006 08:21 PM

I do

:D

CurliLocks 12-05-2006 12:14 AM

We do, or at least used to. :? I can't find a nice wreath to hold the candles. Our old one fell apart, it was just a foam one with holes for candles and cheap greenery. I've been trying to find a new one for years now. Maybe I'll have to do a foam one and decorate it myself. I have the candles.

I do have an electric candle thing like the first pic Kurlee posted. We got it in Germany. Everyone thinks it's the jewish one.

Elicia 12-05-2006 12:21 AM

what is Advent ? i don't think i have ever heard of it

CurliLocks...I did my own :)
Got a brass candle holder & some greenery to wrap around it & also weaved the colors of Advent thru it w/ some cool thick ribbon I found. I think it came out pretty well. 8) If I say so myself!
I think we've had it since we've been married.
It's held up very nicely.

Advent is the 4 weeks before Christmas in the Catholic Church and some Protestant denominations. It's a time set aside for preparation and expectation to welcome Christ's coming. Each of the 4 Sundays, a candle is lit in the wreath and prayers are said at Church, and many families also light a wreath, read stories, pray etc. at home.

heavengirl410 12-05-2006 07:30 AM

I celebrate it also. We also have a "posada" (spanish) It is usually at someone,s house, and it is a reanactment of Mary and Joseph asking for a place to sleep. Two people usually dress up in costumes of Mary and Josheph, and have like 10 people outside with them and they sing(asking to come in) and there are people inside that sing back to them, and eventually they are let in. Then there is more singing and usually, there are more Christmas songs sung, in English and Spanish like Feliz Navidad. And the Host will have food for everyone. It has always been done at my Grandmas house for as long as I can remember.

We call that "parang" in Trinidad.

heavengirl410 12-05-2006 11:20 AM

That's really neat that the same customs are celebrated through out the Americas, it's just weird that they have different names. Kinda like food in some contries it is called one thing and in another it is called something totally different. Or it is called the same thing in both countries, but it is actually something very different in different places. Sorry, hope that wasn't to confusing, but do you get what I mean?

This is kinda interesting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advent

The Protestant church (at least in Europe) comes from the Catholic church so that is why they have many similarities.

Jaxie 12-05-2006 04:24 PM

I at least used to. Since all of us are older now its hard to do all of that stuff. But I went to Catholic school and every year there were advent wreath making parties and we always have an advent calendar with the chocolates inside. ~~jax

WileE - does the candle holder hold all 4 candles? I've never found one like that. :( Is it a wreath or straight?

I just found some here: http://www.catholicsupply.com/christmas/chadvwrea.html

They have some nice ones but I'd like to make/decorate my own. I like the brass plain one but it's too big. :(

Maybe I'll run to my local Christian book store and see what they have. Duh!

CurliLocks...here is a pic. It's not very close, but I hope you get the idea :)

It looks a lot like the brass finish Advent wreath they have listed towards the bottom of the page. Is that the one you said was too big? I measured the one we have & it's not more than 7 in...hmmm

Yes...do that! That's where I went & got all my candles the other day.lol

Poodlehead 12-06-2006 11:02 AM

Wile, I can't view your fotki, but it sounds a lot like the wreath we have. It's just a low brass ring with 4 candle holders on ot. We tied greenery onto it with red ribbone, and we bought it at the St. Patrick's Guild store, although I'm sure any Christian store would work just fine.

ETA: This is ours.

Mar 12-06-2006 12:21 PM

We do.
December is ALL about Advent and trying not to get caught up in the crazy Christmas rush.
I love Advent because we celebrate the SEASON,not ONE day :)

WileE-Dead 12-06-2006 12:21 PM

Poodle...can you see it now?
