Pet help! Cat is not feeling good...

SO and I have noticed that our orange cat is not feeling well. He has been really lethargic and sleepy and has been showing his third eyelids for about a day and a half.

He spent most of the afternoon/evening yesterday sleeping on the bed, but we thought he was just being lazy. Now all day today he's been sleeping and third eyelid-ing. He even hissed at the other cat when the little one tried to play with the orange cat.

SO has noticed that he is still eating and drinking today, and there were kitty poops in the litter box that belong to him that were from the last two days. He came to the food bowl at dinner time tonight and still flicks his tail around when we pet him.

SO and I can't think of anything that has changed in the last two days-- no new toys or anything else laying around. The house plants we have are all non-cat-toxic (we check before we buy after the lily incident from two years ago...) so we can't figure out what may have happened.

Is this dreadful enough to need to call the emergency vet, or can we wait until tomorrow to take him to the regular vet? Or is this something that may resolve on it's own? Any ideas on what's wrong?

Thanks for the help. I wish this poor orange cat would stop having health emergencies

If he's eating and using the litterbox as usual, I don't think I would make an emergency call, but I would call and get him in soon just to be checked over. Sometimes animals just get sick and don't act themselves for a few days. Cats especially want to be alone. Hate to take the chance it is something serious so I would get him into the vet to be on the safe side.

It doesn't sound like an emergency. Take him to the vet once it opens if you are still concerned.

Hope kitty feels better soon!
If he lets you hold him, try feeling around him to see if he hurts anywhere. He could just be sore somewhere from landing funny. I probably wouldn't call the vet until tomorrow unless he stops eating or using his litter box.

Maybe he's depressed.

I'd take him to the ER. If he is acting strangely, it is time to go. Animals don't start acting weird unless there's something really wrong.

I think that I deceive genius.
You mentioned he is having bowel movements, what about urinating?

I am a technician, so I obviously advocate getting your pet to a vet when something is off with them.

Did you get him to the vet today? How is he?

SO and I fully plan on taking the cat to the vet, but our vet closed at 5:00 today which is why I asked earlier if it seemed like an emergency situation where we would need to go to an emergency vet or if it would be ok to wait until tomorrow morning. My SO just lost his job so we don't have a ton of extra money for the emergency vet fees. If the cat seemed really ill and was getting worse, we wouldn't hesitate; but he's seeming more active this evening so I think we're going to wait till morning.

It sort of seems like there may be a problem with his eye. He has his eyes kind of shut with the third eyelid showing, but his right eye is more closed and seems a bit swollen. He had a bad recurring pink eye infection about a year ago in the same eye, so I wonder if maybe it's coming back. It didn't really present like this though; his eye was all goopey last time and it's not really like that, plus he's actually acting sick this time.

It's possible that the cats rough-housed a little too much and the orange cat got his eye bumped, but I don't know why he would be acting sick.

He seems to be hanging in there ok tonight, so we'll call the vet when they open in the morning and see what they want us to do. I'll update then.

Thanks again.

I've never found the emergency vet to be useful for anything other than trauma (broken bones/cuts/bites). For illness, they tell you to see your own vet the next day, then relieve you of $350.

Please keep us posted! Hope everything turns out all right!

Oh no. I hate it when one of my pets is sick. ((hugs)) and good thoughts for you and kitty.

Please give us an update when you know anything!
Update: Kit seemed much more normal today, but we could tell he still felt kinda cruddy. We were able to get him in to see the vet before lunch. The vet said that he has an upper respiratory infection and gave him a shot of azimycin ($45!!) and some antibiotic ointment for his eyes. This is what they did for him last year about this time when he had pink eye.

We haven't noticed any sneezing or coughing really, but his eyes do seem swollen and a bit runny (not like the pink eye). It doesn't really look like a cold to me, (the black cat had one when we got him from the SPCA) but I guess doctor knows best.

The cat was rather nasty to the vet and the tech, but he's feeling better now that we've gotten him home. Poor baby! I'm sure he'll be feeling better soon.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Aww, this reminds me of when my kitty caught a cold from the SPCA when I brought her home. Its like a human cold, they sneeze and get a runny nose and sometimes even cough, lol. Hope your kitty makes a full recovery...

I'm glad he's on the mend. Poor kitty.

The antibiotics made him feel a lot better really quickly last time, so I'm hoping he'll be right as rain by tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks again for the support, everyone!

I'm glad he's better. When my poor dog is sick, she's so pitiful...makes me sad.
