S/O Learning about rumors about yourself?

Like Tree3Likes

The other thread got me thinking about the time I learned that everyone in my graduating class thought (and most still do think) that I'm a lesbian.

Apparently it started early in middle school when a mean group of girls, who hated me because they couldn't get to me, started the rumor. I ignored them, and didn't even deny or confirm it, because I always acted like they weren't worth my attention. Its why they hated me. I assumed that after the new 'Shelby gave a guy a ****job in the restroom' came out (untrue) the 'Mystic is a lesbian' rumor was forgotten.

Little did I know. By senior year of high school the whole 'clique' thing dissolved and people relaxed a little and I got less defensive and started making friends with people I've known for years and the summer after graduation someone asked if I'd like to go on a double date with him, his girlfriend, and another girl. I cleared it up, but I never made a blanket announcement to everyone in my class.

Did anyone else learn about rumors about themselves after the fact?

When I was a teenager, we moved to another state. My parents got a call from some friends of ours in the old state a few months later, offering their condolences. It seems someone started a rumor that I died in a car crash!

In college, there was a rumor that I was dating the drummer of the campus christian group I attended. We were never more than friends, and we both laughed about it.

In elementary school, someone's mom started a rumor that I was on drugs, because my older brother was a bit of a delinquent. That one sucked. I was often asked why my eyes were bloodshot (allergies, and contact lenses) and questioned about my "suspicious behavior." I was a quiet kid, mostly - apparently that meant I was on drugs.

When I first moved to AR there was a rumor started that I was gay....Apparently someone who refuses to be catty, doesn't want to be on the cheer team (It was a tiny school....9/10ths of the girls were or had tried out for cheer), doesn't want to cake her face in makeup, and didn't spend every free second of her time chasing boys is a lesbian.

Eventually that passed, and I was friends with almost everyone in the school. A few months after I moved a rumor went around that we were moving back. Don't know why that one was started either.

I have nasty allergies, and usually have bloodshot eyes in the spring and fall, so I was accused of being a druggie once.

Considering all the times I've moved I've gotten off quite easy.....

When I got divorced, my ex told all kinds of outrageous things about me to anyone who would listen. Apparently I was the town trollop (can I say trollop here?).

I've always joked that if I'd done even half the things he accused me of, I would have been one very happy lady!

When I was in high school, a boy and I broke up and a few days later, some boys in the locker room started asking him for "details" about me. He was bragging and boasting about all the things he had done with me which NONE was true.

I should have known something was up when I was suddenly getting asked out by all the guys on the football team. I only heard about it because one of the players was a good friend and he let me know what the former boyfriend was saying. Poor thing, I pretty much set the record straight in between classes in the hallway and embarrassed him.

As a side note, this same idiot called me a few years ago because he'd just gotten divorced and had been "thinking about me." Yeah, after 30 years. Idiot.

I was born to be a pessimist. My blood type is B Negative.
You were a trollop too? (an ex called me one once) hehe!!

But seriously.

I just remembered a rumor that I heard about myself. My very last boyfriend I ever had I was friends with for almost ten years. Well when we first met I wad friends with a big group of boys and girls. I guess one of the boys started a rumor that we had sex at his house, he was apparently very graphic about it.

I was horrified! I was 14 and we were only friends!!!!

And even worse is that the bf didn't tell me until year 7 of our friendship so he ha believed it was true the whole time.

Horrible.

Not that big of a deal but at my last job there was a rumor that I was buying porno's from the bootleg movie selling guy. There were a few others, mostly about dating coworkers, but I can't remember the specifics anymore.
When I was in undergrad, here was a rumor that I was telling people I was pregnant. It caused big drama with the guy I was dating and his friends (he was in a popular fraternity). They all thought I was a crazy liar. Turns out, there was another girl on campus named "scrills" who was pregnant. but it was too late, everyone thought it was me being psycho.

After breaking up with my first serious boyfriend, I started dating other people. There was a guy I was really into and he suddenly stopped returning my texts and calls. Eventually it came out that my ex had told him I had type 2 herpes and that is why we broke up. It took awhile to get that damage undone.

I was apparently accused of being very easy and promiscuous in a high school I attended for 1 year. I actually never had sex until after high school, but BC I turned down some needy 'popular' guys they spread some nasty information.

A 'friend' of mine went around telling people that when I gave him a ride home late one night, I tried to get him to take me upstairs to his apartment but BC he was friends with my bf at the time, he just couldn't do it. HA! As if I would ever be interested in this guy, and as if he would ever turn me down!

I know there have been others. People love to make stuff up.

In high school there was a myspace made of me calling me gay and saying that my family was illegal immigrants and threatening to report them. That my mom only married my step father to get a green card. Saying my father was a terrorist. I had to contact myspace to have it removed.

Recently I came across a blog (my bf found it) that someone made using my name and pretending to be me. Its so bad and I'm so embarrassed about it. The person curses a lot in it and says that "I" don't like black guys. It puts black men down. I would never do that. My father is mostly black and my mom is mixed as well which makes me black. I tried to have it removed but google won't do anything.
It's happened to me a few times. It was more painful when I was younger; the older I got, the more ridiculous it seemed.

Throughout nursing school the same person started the rumor that i was pregnant 3 times. I confronted her and she couldnt even deny it. A few days ago she called and i didnt answer. She left a voicemail offering an apology for the rumors and asking if i could help her get a job where i work. HA!

I moved around a lot as a child so I never had rumors that stayed or something. I don't even notice when there are rumors about me TBH. I am SO SLOW when it comes to "gossip". I probably wouldn't know until a decade later. I think it's because I zone out 99% of the time and I only know if someone is talking **** if I hear them talk **** infront of me. Otherwise, I don't hear it.

And honestly, I don't care either, haha. I was bullied so much in grade school, after a while you learn not to care anymore.

When I was off work for my first back surgery apparently I was actually off with depression so bad it resulted in me slitting my wrists.

The surgeon did a fantastic job clearing those scars right up.
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.
K-12 people worked over time to make others believe that I was a mean girl. It wasn't a big deal in grade school bc my class was small and very tight knit. The rumors were always started by girls in lower grades. One day my entire class confronted the main source of the problem, who I had words with more than once, without me knowing or asking. Gotta love family

High school was a different situation. I couldn't even walk in the door without being approached by someone and accused of spreading horrible rumors about them, or making fun of the way they dressed. Half the time I didn't even know their first or last name and on more than one occasion we would be wearing almost identical clothing. It never made sense.

When I started my job a co worker told anyone, and everyone, that they should not bother speaking to me. She told them all that I was shy and lacked personality so it wouldn't do any good to try. Thankfully there were a handful of officers/fire dept mbrs that didn't listen, and actually requested to speak to me. They made me feel welcome and helped me train. I appreciate them more than they know. It does still amaze me how many people believed this to be true. 9 years later and I have an incredibly good reputation as a worker, but have still never been invited to functions outside of work. But hey! I didn't come there to goof off.

And let me add, one of the 3 people who continuously kept things stirred up about me in high school was *supposedly* a friend. I found out what she had been doing after she gave me a letter from a boy I had a HUGE crush on. He said he had a crush on me, and wanted to date, but was shy. When I approached him I found that he had never written the letter. My heart sank and I was completely embarrassed. She had actually written it herself and didn't think I would speak to him about it. When I confronted her she admitted making up a great deal of stuff about me. I'll just say... that was a messed up situation.
