Condoms a big problem for men in India
Most men's penises are an inch too short for popular prophylactics

Updated: 3:53 p.m. ET Dec 11, 2006
NEW DELHI - Condoms designed to meet international size specifications are too big for many Indian men as their penises fall short of what manufacturers had anticipated, an Indian study has found.

The Indian Council of Medical Research, a leading state-run center, said its initial findings from a two-year study showed 60 percent of men in the financial capital Mumbai had penises about 1 inch shorter than those condoms catered for.

For a further 30 percent, the difference was at least 2 inches. A poor fit meant the prophylactics often didn't do the job they were bought for, and led to some tearing or slipping off during use.

"One of the reasons for a failure of up to 20 percent (of condoms) is the association of the size of the condom to the erect penis," the council's Dr. Chander Puri told Reuters, adding another reason was couples often put them on in a hurry.

Puri said many men in India, which has the world's highest HIV positive caseload, were too shy to ask for condoms.

"We need more vending machines for condoms of different sizes so people can pick a condom with confidence that is suited to their needs," he said.

The Times of India reported the ICMR survey had studied 1,400 men between 18-50 years of age in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi as well as in rural areas in a report. It entitled its story "Indian men don't measure up."

I'm not sure the article maligned a whole race of men, since it was an Indian study and newspaper that authored and published the study (though the headline "Indian men don't measure up" wouldn't seem to be the best way to encourage people at risk for AIDS to use condoms.) Without the headline, I think, if the study is accurate, this is vital information to the health of Indians that needs to be addressed, but it has to be approached sensitively since this is such a personal subject.

I bet it is not only some Indian men who have this problem...

I agree that this in an important finding, but presenting this way doesn't seem to be with the best journalistic integrity..t

This just makes me wonder if this is the case everywhere, as it's generally (and unscientifically, as far as I know) accepted that men overestimate size. And if condoms are based on the size men estimate, I think the only part about it being specific to Indian men is the fact the study was done in India.

IF these are the facts from a true, extensive survey, then I dont see how any race or anyone is being "malaigned". If they have small penises, they have small/er penises, SO WHAT?

Precisely, THIS is the real issue, or at least it should be.

Didn't I read somewhere that condom manufacturer in North America and Europe found out they needed to make smaller sizes for the Asian market?

I think some generalizations can be made with regard to penis size and race. Glamour magazine discussed at length (no pun) a scientific study done on this topic several years ago. I don't think it's a big deal (no pun)..as they related corresponding vagina sizes to women of the different races as well. One race is taller, one has curlier hair, smaller behinds, different ear wax, larger genitals. Who cares...I mean it's an interesting article that was posted. I don't mean to say i don't care about this thread. i'm just saying for the Indian men who are embarrassed by it...well, no biggie (no pun).
