Restaurant overcharged my card

SO and I were out of town last week and stopped at a local restaurant. I paid with my debit/credit card and left a tip on it, and then we left. I was balancing my checkbook tonight against my bank account, and the amount that went through from the restaurant was $5 more than what I signed for on the receipt. We can't find the receipt, but we had documented the expected charge several places, and to be safe, I did the math from what we ordered. Do I call the bank or the restaurant? Do I need the receipt to make this right?

Can you check the statement from the CC online? I do that all the time. Had a couple of disputes for the first time ever this year...
I disputed thru my CC company...

SO and I log all of our receipts in a budget book, and I go off the receipt for my checkbook, and both were consistent with what I remember the receipt being.

I guess I'll give the bank a call Friday and see what to do. Not cool, man.

Is it just an authorization or is it an actual finished transaction? We have a restaurant and our credit card processing company will authorize an amount that is 10% more than the actual bill in case someone adds a tip later. Then that authorization drops off and the actual amount is charged.

If it is not a pending transaction just call the restaurant first. They should be able to fix it. We had one issue once and we just refunded the money when they brought in a copy of their statement. We actually would have done it anyway without a copy but they had it with them.
I agree with Willow. My restaurant charges are always off for a few days, sometimes under, sometimes over the amount I signed for. They have always "adjusted" to the exact amount after a few days in my experience. Not sure why restaurant transactions are that way...
It's a completed transaction, so it shouldn't be changing. I guess I'll try the restaurant first, and if they won't do anything, I'll try the bank. Thanks.

being a server for many years sometimes the writing on the checks are not legible so the servers will guess what the tip is and usually will "err" on the higher number. since youre not a regular some unscupulous server will add extra and bet that you will forget or wont dispute the total for the extra 5$.

I'm not sure how they "mistook" a 31 for a 36 without purposely being shady, but I'm not gong to say that when I call. I just want my money back.

I worked as a restaurant book keeper for a long time so I might have some useful advice for you.

First of all, you should not need the receipt. All you need to do is call the restaurant and tell them that you were over charged on your card. They will need to know what day you were in, approximately what time, and what the last 4 digits of your credit card number are as well as what type of card you used (Visa, MC, AMEX??) They should be able to pull up your receipt from that information.

Once they find the receipt and they see there was an error made, they will fill out a credit card dispute form and start the process of refunding you. It may take 5 to 7 days for the money to be back in your account.

Having worked as a book keeper and a server for a very long time, my guess is that it was an honest mistake. In some places the server keeps all of their credit card receipts until the end of the night and then they enter their tips from those receipts into the computer. Chances are they put someone else's tip under your card number, and your tip under the other person's number because the numbers may have been similar. That sort of thing happens quite often.. Human error.

Either way, I hope you get your money back.

Because of the holiday, I haven't had a chance to call. I'm headed to work now, but I plan to handle it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

The restaurant said they'll go through the receipts and accounts from that time, and they'll give me a call back. So I hope this is pretty much resolved. Thanks for all the advice!
