I use a base coat, but saturated colors like reds and blues and blacks can still stain my nails. At least I don't smoke. Smoker yellow looks different.

Here are some nail care tips from one of the bloggers I follow: The Lacquerologist: Mani 101

I can't vouch for most of the products she uses, I don't use them, but the tips still apply. HTH

I really don't have good nails. They spend alot of time in the dirt which is super hard on them. They've always been thin, tend to peel, and grow super slow. A faulty thyroid doesn't help matters. But in the winter when they are out of the dirt they look pretty good. I think polish helps protect my weak nails.

I use cheap polish, no base or top coat, no treatments. I do take biotin along with loads of other supplements. It seems to help my nails and hair. I always wear gloves to do dishes and I do try to wear gardening gloves for most jobs.

Other than that, we just can't fight genetics. My sisters inherited beautiful, long, thick, fast growing nails. And great teeth. I got migraines and a bad thyroid. Go figure. : )

My polish chipped after a big day of laundry and dishes. Can't say I'm sad since I wanted to try a new Zoya. I just put on Cynthia and I really like it. Pics tomorrow. Hope my camera catches te blue.

Henny- I love that blue on you too.

My nails look like I'm a chain smoker. I've tried two different base coats with no luck. I'm just skipping the base coat now. Anyone know a good stain blocking base coat?

Finger Paints Go Van Go. I think it looks like the panetone color of the year, emerald. The second pic is with dots of Finger Paints A Tough Art to Follow, Wet 'n Wild Megalast Garden Hose, and the poor choice of Rimmel Rags to Riches. It is the center bottom dot and it is too yellow. I should have used the dark green for that dot. Oh well. It was inspired by a mani I saw on pinterest. I like both versions of this mani.
ETA: As soon as my Zoyas arrive, I'll be furiously stripping this mani off.

Jordana Cosmetics - Nail Products - Nail Polish - Nail Treatment

The "Tough Stuff" prevented my yellowing which had been getting pretty bad, and it's a base coat and top coat in 1

Avon's 'gel strength' base coat is on sale right now for $4 (usually $6.50) so I went ahead and ordered one based on just ONE review. Hopefully she's right! I just started noticing my nails yellowing, and I've never used a base coat before.

The Jordana ones look interesting.

jeep, I am sure you are right. My mom had great, strong nails. Her sister did not, that I recall. My nails are more like my aunt's. It just the luck of the genetic draw.

And Jordana is BOGO 50% at K-mart this week. I'll pick some up if I get there. I also want to check out the Jordanna glitter polishes.
ETA: I love Jordana blush. It is super pigmented and lasts. If someone browses the polish, you might want to check out the blush too.

polish! polish! polish! I realized I need to start weekly manis (I often go 10 days) even if the mani looks good, just so I can use all my colors within a year! How on earth do you get your manicures to last for 10 days?! My polish ALWAYS chips within 2-3 days. What base coat do you use?

What do you mean by natural? I dont have acrylics or gell nails so I think natural means your real nail not an artificial one. I am a nail bitter and I have been trying to fix that problem for the past year. My nails still are peeling its my pointer fingers and middle fingers that peel most no matter what produucts I use to help fix it. I also try to go without polish at least 2 days a week to give my nails a little breather from polish and its also when I pamper my nails with a manicure either at the salon or my home. I just prefer to have polished nails because it helps me not to bite my nails as I have in the past. I know a few of us did a nail challenge thread in the summer, maybe we could do another one this year too.

I was thinking along the lines of no polish. I pretty much never wait between polishes and think my nails can benefit from a breather.

I like the idea of a nail challenge.

Mine last at least seven days. The key to that is keeping my nails short - just fingertip length. I like that length anyway (short and square for a '40s sort of vibe) and it helps keep the polish from chipping off.

I also put on an extra layer of top coat at least once during the week, which probably helps.

I also keep my nails at fingertip length but they still chip within 3 days tops.

What base and/or top coat do you use?

How much time do you leave between coats? I use Essie solid rock as a base coat and two layers of either Essie or OPI polish. I wait approx. 10 minutes between layers. I used essie's no chips ahead for a couple of months but I stopped using any top coat because I felt that extra layers made my mani chip even faster.

I don't mind tip weat but as soon as my nails start chipping I take the polish of.

This goes back to the polish for me.

I got a few bottles of Valmy which is a brand from Latin America which lasts about two weeks (I kid you not). I don't know what I'm gonna do when they are finished.

Revlon also lasts really long on me. Like the last time I wore polish I was on day 5 and the only chips were from where the nails were peeling off.

FYI: I use the Jordana base and top coat I posted about earlier.

Lately, I have used OPI Start to Finish or Sally Hansen Double Duty, and Anise fast dry top coat. My manis last but sometimes I do get a few chips. I just touch them up and apply a top coat to seal. Like PH, a fresh top coat mid-week helps them last longer too.

Simple feminine feather nail art. It's been too long since I've done any decent nail art.
