Personally, my parents never taught me to believe in Santa and I won't ever teach my kids (if I have any) to believe in Santa. I think that's the best way to go.

Honestly? If the kid was past 8 or so and still believed, I'd have the talk with him/her. By that age, enough kids have figured things out that schoolyard chatter and such will start to run toward the no Santa position. I think it becomes a trust issue if the kids at school are being more straight with your kid than you are.

Edited to add: But I did get presents from "Santa" (*wink, nudge*), 'made in China' or whatnot stamped on the bottom, with my mother's writing on the tag. So they weren't opposed to the whole idea of "let's pretend and have some fun..." - it was balanced.
