I'm a hygienist and almost ALL my patients that have had bicuspids removed for ortho, end up having jaw and/or bite issues as they get older! My daughter had braces and I would never have allowed that! Thankfully it wasn't an issue but if it was, I would have found an orthodontist that wouldn't have to have them removed. There are plenty that do it. The removing of all 4 bi's is pretty old school. They don't do it as much any more.

The philosophy seems to be evenly divided...yes-pull-them and OMG-don't-ever-pull-them.

I wish there was an alternative, but my daughter has SEVERE crowding. They pulled 5 baby teeth today that still had roots, at 13 years old, because the adult teeth were so far up in her head they were never going to come in on their own, because there was no room. Plus, she is genetically missing one of her second bicuspids, so she'd have to have that replaced...and where we would get the space for that, I have no clue. She has an open-bite in addition to the crowding, so a palate expander would make the open-bite worse.

Frankly...she has bite issues NOW. I can't worry about future bite issues when she's currently dealing with bite issues.

I felt like I was between a rock and a hard-place. I consulted with THREE orthos before making this decision. I'm not regretting the decision, because we made it with the best info we had available.

You made the right decision. If all three orthodontists said the same thing, and pulling teeth is part of the overall treatment plan, it will be fine. Besides, the teeth are gone.

Yes, a lot of adults who had so many teeth pulled have bite issues now. Besides not pulling teeth like they used to, they also recommend that people keep wearing their retainers for the rest of their lives. I bet if you polled the adults with bad bites who had teeth pulled when they were kids, you'd find that most didn't wear their retainers.

I wear my retainer on the weekends to keep the teeth in place and more often if my jaw starts to pop or hurt. I have TMJ as a result of my bad teeth and bad bite, so if my jaw starts to hurt and starts to pop, then I'll wear my retainer at night to help it.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

I had tons of overcrowding when I was young and it seems that removing the teeth is what they did when braces weren't an option for $$$ reasons. My parents would have NEVER forked over the $ for braces. So, all I ever had was pulled teeth. My front teeth look fine, but yes, the bite in the back is off.

I think that since you've gotten so many different opinions, you are in good hands.

My son will start his ortho work in a week or so. He will get a palate expander along with partial braces on top, and a small bite plate behind his top front teeth. He will likely have some kind of bar thing on the bottom too to keep those aligned. he's only 8, but we've had a few people/hygenists/dentists/orthos tell us if we wait longer it will be more work and more pain for him. So, this will be about 12 to 18 months, then phase 2 will be after he hits puberty. Looking at him now, and looking at his dad, Lil Roo has a LOT of growing to do in the next 7 or 8 years.

I'm glad to hear that things went well! Like everyone else has said, it sounds like pulling the teeth was probably the best move.

I feel for her right now, though - pain meds or not, having a sore mouth like that is pretty miserable... It gets in the way of everything! But, I think she probably won't mind it in the long run!

She got her braces installed on Thursday. My poor baby. She is S-U-F-F-E-R-I-N-G! The girl who sailed through 8 teeth being pulled with hardly a pause, has been brought to her knees by the actual braces. She was begging me tonight to let her have them taken off...says she "can't take it". I have her drugged with codeine tonight so she can sleep. Hopefully, she'll be better in the morning.

My older boys both had braces, and I don't remember them being so uncomfortable and distressed. I guess she's so bad because she has those big spaces from the extractions that need to be filled with teeth, so she has some serious apparatus with thick wires in there to move the forward teeth back.

I hope this gets better. I'm taking her back to the ortho on Monday if she's not substantially better.

Poor baby. I hope she adjusts soon. Yeah, braces can hurt like hell at times. I had the stupid headgear when I had them.

Stupid trick that seriously worked for me when I got my braces on and ever got them tightened was to swish with saltwater. Painkillers (tylenol or aleve or ibuprofen, etc.) wouldn't cut it, but swishing with saltwater would relieve the pain. Weird concept, but truly, it did work.

Yeah, it hurts when they're put on and then every month when they get retied. Oh, then there's when they put in the stronger wire. For me, the worst part was the the canker sores I'd get after they put in the brackets. It was from the plastic thingies they use to keep your mouth open combined with the air they use to keep your teeth dry. (I had my bottom brackets put in over the space of a year so I went through it way too many times.) I could suffer through the tooth pain by eating soup but the canker sores were awful.

One little tip my dental hygienist gave me is to try Aleve. For me, it doesn't work for headaches, body aches, etc so I was skeptical. However, there's something about Aleve that works particularly well for teeth. Who knew? If nothing else, it is worth a shot and it might even be her lifesaver.

Oh yeah, and because of the canker sore issue, maybe get some Biotene mouthwash.

Oh, that poor thing. When my daughter had braces I know they hurt some but nowhere near as much as what your daughter is experiencing.

She's a bit better this morning. She's been taking Aleve and Tylenol round-the-clock since Thursday, but the only thing that really helped was the codeine and getting a little sleep last night. I don't want to drug her with codeine during the day, so she's just keeping up with the alternating Aleve and Tylenol, and I'll give her more codeine tonight.

She's all swollen, so I've got her using ice today. I think I'll have her swish with salt water too.

Sorry, I forgot to specify warm salt water.

Is it the wires, or something rubbing? When my son got his braces on last fall, he had something rubbing the inside of his cheek, which they were able to burr off and make him much more comfortable. I hope she feels better soon!

It's the rubbing and also the sheer pressure of the heavy-duty wires pulling. She said: "It's so tight...feels like my head is going to explode". She's been keeping wax on all the rubbing points, which has helped, and she says today the pressure is much less, so I guess the teeth must have moved enough to ease the pressure. Poor thing...it's been a difficult weekend for her.

8 teeth!!!! that seems like a lot of teeth to have removed.
well, beauty is sometimes painful.
in the end it will be worth it and she'll almost forget all about it.
trust me, in a few short months her teeth will look completely different!
