low carb eating for a healthy weight

Like Tree25Likes

Went from 190 to 160 and am happy to hang out at 160. I'm not going for 'skinny' since I like some roundness and skinny would look silly on my frame.

Getting used to eating breakfast and packing a lunch was one of the harder parts to get used to.

I'm so excited to see a LC thread here! I thought I was the only one!

here's my favourite LC community forum. Come on over and look around. Psst: the recipe section is the best on the web IMO. Some boards can get snarky and mean, but this board is consistenly nice, helpful people who really love to support one another.

I'm super glad about this thread being here too. I am an absolute sucker for carbs and crave them all the time! So I'm going to start lo-carbing right this minute and can hopefully transition to lower-carb for maintenance. Basically going to try to eliminate starchy veggies, rice, pasta, and breads along with sugar until I hit my goal.

Ugh! I've done this before and let myself go back to "normal" crazy land. Weeeeel, that didn't work. This time I want it to be a REAL lifestyle change. I don't really even like the crap I've been eating and for sure HATE how I feel. So I'm joining you all!

Hey OP, would you mind changing the title of this to Lo-Carb or something like it as I don't really feel this is "crash dieting"? What do you all think?

Welcome everyone that is new to the thread!! This thread is what got me started. I researched the atkins website...gave a good way to get started and move forward. Good Luck to you all!!

There are so many different approaches and theories.

I like this book by Dana Carpender. She gives an overview of various approaches and how they work, with enough reference so that one can get the referenced book if need be.

Amazon.com: How I Gave Up My Low-Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds (Revised and Expanded Edition) (9781592330409): Dana Carpender: Books

She also has some low carb cookbooks (though the recipes don't include calorie counts) and a blog/Facebook page. She has PCOS so has to stay low carb.

I have one of George Stellas cookbooks and I really like it. I plan on getting his others. The recipes are very flavorful, and you don't need much in the way of alternative ingredients, aside from sweetener and almond meal.

Amazon.com: Eating Stella Style: Low-Carb Recipes for Healthy Living (9780743285216): George Stella, Christian Stella: Books

I plan on maintaining here for a bit, and maybe go for another 10lbs later. But, for now, I'm pretty happy where I am. Clothes shopping is easier at any rate.

I've gone low carb since April and I've shed 20 lbs. I don't follow the Atkins or South Beach diets, but I follow their principles. First two weeks, you should really be strict with yourself and try not to eat more than 30 grams of carbs a day. Okay, no one really wants to count the carbs, but let them be either a low carb wrap (some have 5 - 10 net grams in them) or just veggies (no peas, carrots, corn or potatoes).

Allow yourself some indulgence once a week or when you hit your first goal. I allow myself 1 pint of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food ice cream every other week, and I do this with no guilt.

Good Luck!

Well I splurged this weekend.

I had a hamburger, chips and queso, texas salsa, and homemade mint chocolate chip ice-cream and cookies. Oh yeah, and shared 2 bottles of sparkling wine with frozen strawberries with my sister in law. LOL

My weight jumped about 2 pounds this weekend..but hoping it will be back down by Friday.

Bad thing is the leftovers in the fridge...but hoping maybe I can eat a little of it...but not over indulge and get the weight back down.

FYI, may be TMI,

Do any of you seem to just poop it all out...if you over indulge one day...the next day your in the bathroom all day? I find I do this on the weekend...if I overindulge one day.
I notice the poop thing. I think my gut got used to not having so much grainy stuff, so that getting it overstimulates me. It's looser too, and not as solid as my regulars.

I did well yesterday until the end of the day. I ate a normal breakfast and lunch before we went out for the local regatta and fireworks show.

I avoided the lemonade, funnel cakes (and I love those), corn dogs, ice cream, and other such festival food. I passed on the free potato chips that a new company was giving out. I had water and one Diet Coke.

But, after the fireworks, I was hungry. I splurged on a Pittsburgh sammich, the kind that comes with coleslaw and fries on the sandwich.

Here is what I had.

Well, it happens. Back to normal today. Festival food is not for those watching sugar, lol. I should've taken some snacks with me so I wouldn't have gotten so hungry.

Not sure what I was thinking either...usually I skp the burger bun...but I didn't. Of course, didn't make up for all the chips...and yummy dips.

Do you guys also find the opposite is true...if you don't get enough fat or fiber...etc in your diet that you are constipated? I find finding the happy medium sometime is hard.
OK, I'm gonna join because I need to lose weight too, and I need to do it mostly through diet at least for now because I do not have the time or ability to go to the gym yet - I probably will start trying to go in the fall, and in the meantime I will be walking to and from work and the like, but it mostly has to be through food. My problem is that I ate relatively healthy before pregnancy, but then when I was pregnant, I was sick and ended up eating what stayed down best (usually carbs and junk - I couldn't eat vegetables for months) and then even when I felt better, got in the habit of indulging every craving. I have a huge appetite while nursing and nursing isn't helping me lose.

I'm not cutting carbs - I'm trying to re-establish healthy eating habits for the long haul so it has to be something I can maintain, but I am going to try to limit carbs or eat them earlier in the day and make sure they're whole grains and a small proportion of the meal overall. The big thing is going to be time with my crazy schedule, so today I wrote out some easy meals I can make quickly and the shopping lists and menus for each so I can prepare in advance - this is key for me.
