low carb eating for a healthy weight

i'm a healthy and active person that has gotten lax and have about 10 more lbs on me than i like. in a normal circumstance this wouldn't be an issue and i'd just work to get it off, no problem, but i'm going on a big international trip in about 2.5 weeks and when i'm a little "extra" it shows in my face which i hate for pics.

so....i'm looking for some quick, practical tips to shed the extra 8-10 lbs so that i don't look puffy in my vacation pics. i don't care if what i lose is water weight or whatever. here's what i plan to do, please chime in on things that have worked for you when you needed to lose a quick 10:
  • no pastries, cakes, sweets
  • extra cardio (5 times per week, currently only doing 2 times per week)
  • lots of water
  • extra fiber (psyllium husks)
  • no eating after 7 pm (this one will be hard and i know i can't do it every day but i'm going to try)
*** disclaimer: i know crash dieting isn't a good idea, results are not permanent and all that. i'm admittedly looking for a short term fix. ***

Atkins.. you can lose 10lbs in a week and a half.

Cut your sodium intake.

ah, probably no sushi or asian food (my absolute love)! another great point!

Now I might be wrong about this but what I've heard is that if you drink ice cold water you will burn more calories. It's not going to make you loose the 10lbs that you are looking to loose but this might help.....and if I am wrong someone please correct me.

If you need to buy anything at GNC, they give you a free sample of a week's worth of Oxy Elite Pro and that stuff works.

Atkins is good for quick weight loss if you follow the program to a T. When I was on it, I lost 4 lbs. in one week and I didn't even exercise. The first phase is difficult but once you get through it the results are amazing and you feel great! Good luck!

i've heard this too and it's interesting but actually when i went for acupuncture the last time my lady told me that i needed more warming foods to aid in my digestion because my digestion was sluggish. since then it's been only warm or room temp liquids.

does this stuff make your heart race? i want to lose a few lbs but not incur any heart damage. what's the main ingredient that works? caffeine?

That was my concern as well, and I was expecting to feel jittery and nauseous when I tried it (because all diet supplements do that to me), but not at all. It's all natural and although it contains some caffeine, it's not nearly enough to make your heart race or get the jitters. It's thermogenic. You can read about it on their website: OxyELITE Pro - The USP Labs Fat Burner That's MELTING the Market: $27

ETA: It kick-started my diet and I lost a lot of water weight.

I think you can lose weight, but it takes about a year to lose somehwere in the 5 lbs range just by drinking ice water.

That's how I lost the majority of my weight.. but I stayed in the first phase for about 3 months. lol Not healthy at all, but it got the job done. That was back in 2002 or so.

I just finished the Atkins induction phase, and when I did my weekly weigh-in the day before yesterday, I had lost almost 9lbs in 13 days, also with no exercise other than what I get during a normal day. I also feel great! :)

luvmylocs 03-17-2011 03:25 PM

oh girls you have got me excited. i'm going to google the atkins induction phase so i can have all the specifics. THANKS girls!

damn...red wine isn't on the induction phase ;)

misspam 03-17-2011 03:48 PM

Yeah, this was over 10 years ago when losing weight was easier..... I stuck with the program and ended up losing a total of 30 pounds of stubborn baby weight in 4 or 5 months time. The induction phase spurs a quick weight loss that tapers off when you enter the next phases. Besides the weight loss, I just felt great.

And you're right, alcohol is not in the induction phase - sorry, luvmylocs!

When I put on a few pounds I do the fat flush diet. She has added a shake down diet to her plan. I plan to start that this weekend. You can google it and get the info. G/L

I lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks in Dec.

1. low carb
2. limit sugar
3. eat carbs (fruit) before 2pm
4. lots of protein and veggies
5. good oil every day, I use walnut oil on my salads
6. plus I had a glass of red wine night every night

Total loss for me in 8 weeks 19 pounds!! Yeah..... only 10 more to go!

LAwoman 03-17-2011 08:39 PM

Yeah I agree with the ditching carbs to drop some pounds fast. Atkins-- or even the Phase One of the South Beach diet is good, too.

There are also a couple of "old school" diets that work pretty well. One is Stillmans Quick Weight loss and the other is the Scarsdale Diet. Scarsdale is probably the "healthier" of the two. Just google it and you can find the 2 week plan online. It's lower-carb, low-calorie. But lots of fruits and veggies too.

This is actually a good topic-- I'm going to Nashville in mid-April and am hoping to drop 8-10 pounds by then also!

Speaking of weight loss, I watched a very interesting documentary last week called Fat Head. It was about an hour and 45 mins. It shocked me quite a bit. It's available on Netflix instant watch, which is nice. Here's a link to the trailer:
