problem at work

I have this huge problem at work... I work in a facility that has animals (indoors) and for the past year a co-worker and myself have been getting bit by some sort of bug. It's like mosquito bites but it's not mosquitos.
They are having a hard time finding out what it is. We wear scrubs while working.
So, we finally got the health and safety and enviromental person involved in this. See.... our boss is a lazy idiot who shouldn't even be in a supervisor position. Long, long story but last week we all had a meeting and our boss was told to get us some protective clothing gowns until they can figure out what is going on. He was told to do it either on Friday of last week or Wed. of this week (today). I haven't been back to work since last Thurs. because I don't want any more of these bug bites. I emailed the idiot boss and asked if he's gotten the clothing yet and to let me know when he does. I haven't heard a thing. I know what he's done..... I'm sure he just deleted my email to ignore me. He's the laziest person on earth. All he wants to do is to sit at his desk and play on his computer. On Friday, he left early and went home.
So, I called the grievance dept. today to find out if I should be getting paid for days not worked because I don't want to get bit. I'm more than willing to go in and work IF I have some protective clothing.
What do you guys think?? What would you do?

I would have told them that I expect to be paid for the days I would normally be there but wasn't and that I will return when the protective clothing is available.

When buildings are evacuated because of chemical leaks, weird odors and such, the people are still paid. This is like that.
When are women going to face the fact that they donít know their own bodies as well as men who have heard things?

Sounds like you're treading on thin ice to stay out of work because of some flea bites. You might end up fired.

What kind of protective clothing protects against mosquito-like bites? I'd like to have some of that for summer.

We've already contacted the health department thru the university and they agree this is a serious problem. Because there should be no bugs and such there in this facility. I said mosquitos because I can't think of anything else to compare to. The health guy thought it might be an allergen too but in order to get us into a allergy specialist, we have to go thru procedure and see a regular Dr. first which we both did already.
The health guy told our boss to get protective gowns to go over the scrubs until the problem is solved.
My co-worker has HUGE welts that have scarred from this.

Didn't you post about this a few months ago? Did you talk to anyone then, or have any ideas come up? Are they just ignoring the problem?

Sorry if it was someone else who ported a similar problem!

Darby, I thought this sounded familiar! http://www.naturallycurly.com/phpBB/...843&highlight=

You've had this problem a long time. I don't know what I would do but it does sound like they are just ignoring you. What do your coworkers think?

LOL - same problem! But this time we contacted the health and safety person and they are now involved. There is only one other co-worker who is also getting bit. And she is pissed off about it.
Our boss has basically ignored us. We now have the health and safety making our boss find out what is doing this and getting us protective clothing. They gave him a 2 week deadline to figure out what it is. and he's supposed to get us the clothing either Friday or by this week and he hasn't.
Our boss is very stupid and very lazy. I don't think he thinks anything will happen to him and he doesn't want to do anything.
I actually think he WANTS to be fired so he can sit at home and collect un-employment. He doesn't want to work.
If nothing is available tomorrow, I'll call the health and safety guy and let him know our boss has done nothing. If nothing is done by next week, I plan on calling the state OSHA and talk with someone and just see what they say.
But I'm willing to not go back if that's what it takes but I'm not going down without a fight.
We also have many things that are broken and not working and the "boss" refuses to fix them. I have many things duct taped because he refuses to fix them. It's just not right.

Update: We got our protective clothing and my boss didn't mind me not coming in until he was able to get the clothing. I think they have figured out where these mystery bugs are coming from too and they're working on getting it fixed out.
They have these fly type bugs on the pigeons (on purpose) and they are not being contained in their room, they are getting out and they're not supposed to be.
So... they're working on it but agreed that something needs to be done.
I'm happy with the clothing At least I won't get bit. My co-worker refuses to wear the clothing because she said it looks "dumb". But she won't think it looks "dumb" when she starts getting bites!
I don't care what I look like! It's not like vogue is coming - LOL....

I'm glad you finally got things going in the right direction but all I keep thinking is where in the world does this chick work lol. Oh and by the way now I'm all itchy

LOL - I work at a University in the animal department. They do mostly behavorial studies on birds, mice and rats. Nothing mean to the animals. Gene study mostly. With the bugs on the piegons, they're studying evolution on them (bugs, not the pigeons). These bugs only thrive on pigeons -- well I guess that's not totally true - they like chewing on people too!
I pretty much stick with the mice and rats and wood rats. I love the woodrats, they are so cute!
They have a handfed one named Annie.

I'm guessing the birds have mites. I had the same thing until I got rid of my finches and parakeets.
3c
Poo: KBB shampoo bar or Shikai moisturizing shampoo
CoWash: VO5 kiwi
Cond: Robert Craig, Tresemme Natural, or Fekkai Shea Butter
Leave in/Styling: Grapeseed oil, KBB milk, KCCC, and Aveda Confixor
They are actually purposely infecting these birds with a certain fly (real tiny fly). to study the evolution of this fly insect.
The whole theory is that these bugs STAY on the pigeons ONLY but they aren't. They do transfer onto people and bite the crap out of us.
ICK!!

I'm glad they're finally fixing the problem. Your coworker's crazy not to wear the protective clothing!
