Crazy Neighbor

I live in a smallish building - there are 16 apartments on four floors. A new couple moved in to the apartment directly below mine a few months ago, but I'd never met them, seen them, or spoken to them before last night.

My fiance invited a friend of his over to watch the UFC fight that was on last night and they were being a little bit loud. At about 10:30 last night, my downstairs began pounding on my door yelling. He actually broke our door open and entered my apartment, screaming at us to be quiet. I was totally scared. My fiance and his friend had to physically push him out of the apartment and we had to get a locksmith to come over last night to put new locks on the door

This morning, while I was out at pilates and my fiance was sleeping, he started pounding on the door again and screaming at him to be quiet and that he would defend his wife by whatever means necessary. We can't figure out what he meant by that at all. We've never seen his wife, nor have we ever had ANY interaction with them aside from the guy breaking down my door and forcibly entering my apartment. Anyway, we went to the police station today and had him arrested for harassment and for damaging our property. He's a total psycho and I'm really freaked out. I wish I had a big dog or something - my kitties don't offer a lot of protection.

Now I'm worried that he's going to do something else to us.

Good Lord! Call your landlord to let them know what's happening. i have no idea what I would do in that situation but I hope the time in the lockup calmed him down a bit.

That is SCARY. So sorry you had this happen to you! Quick response by the police is good. Hopefully this neighbor will not be living there much longer--I can't imagine a landlord would want this fellow to stay. Be safe.

I've never really had any contact with my landlord. I send my checks to a property management company that doesn't seem to do anything beyond cashing them (like, six weeks after I send them).

I guess I should call them and let them know what's going though ... it won't hurt, at any rate.

I'm neurotic enough without extra life-drama.

OMG!! Heavens, yes! Please call your landlord.
You were very smart to get the police involved.

Good luck!

I would call the landlord too, just to make sure that they know what's going on at their property. Even though the lock was broken by someone, and I can understand why you called the locksmith to fix it immediately, that really is the responsibility of the landlord to fix. I'd look for some financial reimbursement on that.

I think whoever you rent from or whoever manages the property would WANT to know if some psycho was tearing the place up.
How scary!! I'm glad you guys called the police. I would totally get your landlord involved. What a nutjob! Let us know what happens. Good luck.

Please excuse any typos. For the time being, we are blaming it on my computer.
Argh, psycho guys newest tactic is now to buzz my doorbell -- for 5, 10, 15 minutes at a time, on his way to work. When I call the cops, he's gone by the time they get here. WTF? He's done this four times now. Always, when I'm home alone.

I called my landlord and she said she would "send a letter." I'm not if it was a "Notice to Cure" or not, or what it says at all. She did, to the wrong apartment. How nice. She's resending the letter, but basically said there wasn't much she could do about it. Thanks.

It appears I have no effing recourse at all. Landlord won't do anything, and the cops aren't doing anything. Great.

I'm thinking about buying a pair of wooden shoes and rolling up my carpets.

Can you make a recording of this guy harassing you? That way you have it on record.

I say unmarked car/plain clothes so that this guy doesn't see the car/cop and not do it that day.

ETA: Is there a way you can film it? Stick a camera in a window or something? Recording it might not do much good--all you've got is the buzzing, which you or anyone else could be doing. The point is to catch said psycho in action.
Under construction.

Also, since the landlord isn't getting involved, can you get any help from your alderman or someone from the city? I would guess stuff like that would fall under the jurisdiction of the city, but I'm not sure.

Scary stuff.

I'm glad you called the police. Maybe a restraining order? This guy sounds like he will only get worse, and he definitely has threatened you, broken into your house...he seems to be a danger to you and you are doing absolutely nothing to provoke. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I had a downstairs neighbor, not as bad as this, but even so, I was going through PTSD! It was horrible. I can only imaging how unsafe you feel.

This whole thing gets weirder and weirder.

He rang my buzzer again tonight (after the cops were already here!), but this time my fiance was home. My fiance is a big, intimidating looking guy. He decided to go downstairs and confront psycho dude.

He finds ....

Our neighbor dressed like a wizard, with his hands clasped in prayer, standing on the sidewalk in front of our building. He has his head down and he looks up when my fiance came out of the building and said "You shall not pass!"

My fiance asked him what he wanted and the guy took off running up and down the street, with his hands up in the air. Then he came inside the foyer and frantically buzzed his girlfriend. I was listening through the intercom system.

I'm at a loss for words here. I think he's maybe mentally ill (not just weird and angry).

ETA: (for more explanation of today's events) He started that stupid buzzer business around 7pm again tonight, so I called the police and made them come down here. Of course, he wouldn't answer the door. He started again a little after 10, wearing his magical powers outfit.

Holy sh*t, and I thought my neighbor the Laundry Queen was bad!

Is there any way you can maybe talk to his girlfriend and see what the hell is up with this guy? Does she know he's constantly buzzing your apartment? Is she sitting on their couch dressed like a wizard too, or maybe Puff the Magic Dragon?

She's definitely aware of the buzzing, because she Mr. VP saw her standing at her door when he was on his way downstairs.

We think that maybe Merlin is trying to incite my fiance to punch him or something, so that he can be arrested. That doesn't explain the weird outfit though.

I'm so torn between being mad and laughing right now. I'm so confused.

If that girlfriend is aware of all his shenanigans, she's just as bad as he is. I can't believe how childish they're behaving.

Document everything. Don't talk to this guy or have any contact with him. You never know what crazy people might do. If neccessary get a restraining order. Hopefully he will get kicked out before it has to come to that. I'm sure he's disturbing other neighbors too.

We're documenting everything. My building is rent stabilized, so it's a herculean task to actually kick someone out. Even worse if they are mentally ill, as I'm positive this guy is. I'm not as afraid of the guy as I was before, for some reason. Must be the outfit.

We want to move anyway, but we'll probably just use this to break our lease and get out sooner rather than later. The landlord doesn't want to get sued.
