Tired of being sick (long vent)

I've had a rough couple of weeks and just need to vent.

I've always had a lot of sinus/ear issues. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed as a kid and have quite a few allergies. I get frequent sinus and/or ear infections still, despite having surgery twice to repair a deviated septum and clear out my sinuses. I've also had issues with fatigue since I was at least a teenager. About a year ago, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea after the second surgery didn't seem to make much improvement. I started using a CPAP machine, but haven't had much improvement with it. I went in for a daytime sleep test and was found to have "excessive daytime sleepiness due to obstructive sleep apnea". I was put on a drug that is typically used for narcolepsy, but it gave me headaches and kept me up at night, even on a low dose. It doesn't make sense for me to take it since I take a muscle relaxer to sleep as well as medicine for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low thyroid, and anxiety. I'm only 45. I shouldn't be on this much medicine!

Two weeks ago, I woke up feeling really lousy - painful ears, sinuses throbbing. I finally went to the doctor two days later. Even though I had finished a 14 day (not 10) course of antibiotics, I was put on a z-pak for a double ear and sinus infection. It didn't kick in as well as usual. Two days later, I was having some bloody discharge from my left ear and could not hear well at all. My general physician got my into a new ENT that day (I had gone to another for the last infection but couldn't get back in for over a month). The new ENT had me use Afrin and gave me Nasonex instead of the Nasacort AQ I had been using. Of course he also found that I have polyps in my left sinus, a second drainage hole (not sure what it's called) at the back of the left sinus which is causing the mucus to not drain properly, and acid reflux from all the drainage. My hearing was tested and I have significant hearing loss in the left ear and slightly less loss in the right.

Two days later, on a Saturday, I woke up with facial paralysis on the left side. I could only blink my right eye and the left side of my mouth, although I had feeling in it, was acting as if I had had a bunch of novacain(sp?) shots. I finally got hold of the ENT just before lunch on Monday and he wanted to see me immediately. He was somewhat baffled but felt it was caused by the fact that the nerve that controls the muscles runs right through the middle ear. He prescribed prednisone and then suddenly decided he was going to do surgery that afternoon to put a tube in my ear. I went through the surgery alone since my husband works in the city and needed to be sure our five-year-old was taken care of, my mom was with my nephew while my sister was out of town on business, and my MIL was is in a rehab hospital after falling and breaking her ankle and shattering her heel. The doctor agreed to do it under a local so I could drive myself home. After the surgery was done, he told me what a great patient I was for having it done without any anesthesia, not even a local. No wonder it hurt!!!!

It's a week later and I still can't hear out of my left ear. I have a pocket of fluid in there that just won't drain. I'm trying to be good about leaving it alone, but it's driving me nuts. I can feel the fluid, but I just can't get it out. I don't feel as achy and miserable as I did, but I don't have any energy and have been pretty useless. The prednisone certainly didn't get me "wired" like I had been warned it might. Working three days this week wiped me out. I'm a teacher and we only have 4 days this week and an hour the following Monday left. I have been reassigned grade levels and am moving my classroom, so everything needs to be packed up. I teach 6th grade right now, the highest grade in our building, so the there are a lot of special activities going on this week. I'm overwhelmed with all I have to do.

Thank goodness that in two weeks my husband and I are heading to Maui for a week to ourselves. He works ridiculous hours and we get very little time to ourselves. I can only hope that this will resolve itself in time for me to be able to fly!

Sorry to make this so long. I just needed to get it all out. I go back to the ENT on Tuesday and hopefully he will have more answers for me, or at the very least be able to get the fluid out of my ear so I can hear. I'm sorta hoping that the tests on the fluid he already took out shows something other than just a plain infection just so I can feel like it's not all in my head (no pun intended!).

Thanks for listening!

I'm sorry you're going through all of this. I hope you get this resolved before your vacation. Flying with ear/sinus infections is painful....at least you have the tube to relieve the pressure though.
I think that I deceive genius.
Curlyserf, that sounds awful! I'm so very sorry. I had a lot of ear infections as a kid.

I hope the doctor's visit on Tuesday gives you good information and helpful recommendations for treatment. It certainly sounds like an infection because you are so feeling so tired and drained of energy.

I hope the dr. makes sure that it is "just" an ear infection - and I know that sounds idiotic because it can hurt like hell, but especially because you are having other symptoms (facial paralysis) make sure everything is checked out.

Please update after Tuesday!

I'm so sorry you are going thru this. It sounds horrible. I don't have anything to offer other than a (((HUG))) and I truly hope you get better and can enjoy a much needed vacation.

Every person has a unique connection to the Creator that can never be extinguished, and every person has a great soul that can manifest important things in our world. To make a person feel less than they are because of something inside themselves, be it faith, race, or sexual orientation, is the greatest sin of all."
Hi CurlySerf:

Sorry your feeling so bad. I noticed that your symptoms all can relate to your thyroid function not working properly. We started talking about some of it at my first visit. Here's hoping that tomorrow he can get the fluid out and I can start to hear better. Once that's resolved, we can move on to all the other issues!

I saw the ENT today. He did CT scans of the ears and sinuses. He said there is a pocket of fluid behind the left ear that will just need time to drain. My facial paralysis is almost completely resolved, although I still notice some slightly lingering effects when I eat or drink. Everything else looked good. He gave the clearance for me to fly to Maui in 10 days, so that was the best news!

I go back in 3 weeks. The audiologist will test my hearing again and we'll see how everything is going. Hopefully the ear will be much better and we can move on to looking into the other issues.
