She said that she wanted me to have it b/c she doesn't use it and knows I have a party coming up...lol

Nice neighbor!
Looks like one that I have. If so, you can turn the base upside down and the ball/top part of the lid nests inside the upturned base so that you can use it as a punch bowl or a trifle dish.

I had one like that, sure wish I had kept it! Now I just need the top part because I have a cake plate that was my grandmothers, but no cover. I look every time I'm at Goodwill hoping to find a lonely cover in need of a home.
It does look like the type you can use both ways.

Mom said it would be good to use the base for cupcakes that I'll be making.
I also have a tower thingy for cupcakes, but this is so gorgeous not to use!
Yeah, my neighbor, who I've known since we both moved into our houses new [2/99], is a really nice lady...her name is Minh and, of course, she adores hubby

My girlfriend uses a pedestal cake plate (like that without the cover) as a tray for an array of pillar candles. It's gorgeous!
