roland martin suspended from cnn

roland martin is from my city and graduated from the same college as me a few years before me so i've always been more curious about his career. btw, little known fact, he used to be married to debra duncan.

anyway, he's really "blown up" as a cnn commentator. he was suspended for superbowl tweets. i'm curious if y'all think the punishment is too severe or not? this article highlights the challenges with censoring journalist. i'm just really curious what people feel about this.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ummmmmmmmmmmm...well one, he's full of ish for that rationalization about soccer.

I don't think he should have been suspended though. I hope I say this right...but I don't think he was trying to be homophobic, but didn't even consider that men would like Beckham's ad if they are gay. Sometimes people don't think of an alternative lifestyle other than their own when they comment.

sadly, i do think he meant it in the way of saying you should rough up your homeboy if he's gay (i.e. as expressed by admiring beckham in briefs). i don't think he's against gays or for violence against gays but he has forgotten how visible he is and how all of america is not his "homeboy" that he can just joke around with. this is a defining moment because as that one article implied....it's like they'll use this as a means to make him not be so outspoken and rowdy.

i do think it's hard when you're one of those people who has an opinion on everything and you have a loud voice about it. you're bound to say something that is inflammatory and step on toes. i tried to think of this in a different way. suppose martin was a white man and he made some joke/comment about michelle obama that hinted at something negative about black women. i would be upset too. so i understand why the gays might have been disappointed by his comment because they are not dumb and understood his intent. still, were there other ways to talk it out with him and not have him suspended (indefinitely) from his job. i don't know....

I don't think he should have been suspended. Besides that.. to me there is no real proof that he meant something homophobic...given he may have considering he's definitely made it known he's not an advocate of homosexuality in the past...
there are so many gay anchors and writers for cnn. they have to think about the work environment if they let this slide, especially since if the tables were ever so slightly turned and a racist joke was made it would be some serious heat.

i don't know all the details but i saw there was some drama with jc penney's and the ellen show and anti-gay stuff. a lot of stuff comes back to dollars and cnn is a well respected brand that they won't let roland martin tarnish.

He was trying to be funny and said something offensive. He's lucky he didn't get fired.

So he's insinuating that all other men should agree with him about that, and if they agree about the soccer, the ad will definitely have no impact on them because they definitely won't be attracted to the underwear alone. Because men definitely aren't attracted to other men. Like I said on another board, his words are hetero-normative but not homophobic. Everybody isn't thinking about gay people all the time. *shrugs*

As for the second...to assume that that's homophobic is to walk around looking for reasons to be butthurt. ANYONE who walks around in an all pink suit is lame. Information about sexuality irrelevant.

Hmm, actually, I think I once saw a nice skirt and blazer suit in pink. It can be done, but it's gotta be really rare.
