Default Egg question

Ok, so I normally eat my eggs boiled. My method for checking if they're fresh is seeing if they sink inside a cup full of water (I use a measuring cup, which is deeper and wider than a normal glass). I got that from my mother's Cordon Bleu book (if the egg floats, it's because it's fermented inside).

But what if the egg passes the test but smells very eggy? Not rotten, just a very strong egg smell. Like a normal egg, but unusually strong.

By "my eggs" I mean the chicken eggs I bought and now belong to me, not the ones I produce myself.

I don't quite understand. Do you not store your eggs in the refrigerator and you're worried they've gone bad? It takes a whole lot of time for eggs to go bad, and you'd definitely know.
By the way, peeling hard-cooked eggs is easier when the eggs are a little older.

Of course, I keep them in the fridge. I just thought the egg I had last time had a stronger scent, thought it didn't seem rotten, and I've heard other people mention this in other occasions. I was wondering if it meant anything. Egg looks fine, sinks in water etc but has unusually strong smell.

Does it smell before you cook it or after?

If it smells strong before, I'd chuck it. After, I'd blame it on the chicken's diet and not worry about it.

After. I boiled it, so I didn't open it until it was cooked.

Could it be my senses were heightened due to it being that time of the month? I remember my mother once said she thought a (raw) egg had a strong smell. I didn't think so at the time and the egg looked fine, yolk intact and all, but she refused to eat it. My sister seemed to think the egg smelled too.

Probably is okay - if it smelled through the shell uncooked, that would be BAD.

Did you by chance overcook your egg?
Hard-cooked eggs always smell pretty strong to me, especially if they've been sitting in cold water for a bit.

Hard-cooked eggs always stink like farts to me. They seem to smell stronger if you overcook them. They don't need to boil as long as you think. 5 minutes at a full rolling boil is enough (for a medium or large egg...x-large and jumbo may take a minute longer). Or, bring just to boil and then cover and turn off heat and leave for 10 minutes.

I cook soft-boiled eggs for 3 minutes.
