I have a couple of single friends and they keep throwing themselves these splashy bday parties and other parties to commemorate all of these supposed "milestones" that involve gift registries and suggested gift lists...specifically bc they feel they are not acknowledged for being single.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY are you such an attn wh0re??

but aren't brides to be "attention whore"s, getting gift registries and parties because they're getting married, and not to mention wasting all that money on a wedding, and why? To show off their pretty dress, so everyone can poo and ahh at how great their wedding was.

Meh, weddings are overrated.

I "could care less", if the lady married her cat, she ain't paying my bills.

I agree w/ you. I didn't do all that and I feel slightly whenever I'm invited to a big splashy wedding...unless I know it was really all the parents' idea. LOL

(eta - But obviously I do believe in celebrating marriages. Real marriages.)

'm not personally invested in what this woman did, either. But I just feel like commenting bc it seems like it would all be so embarrassing. Like those women who collect the fake babies.

Yea. I wouldn't Attend if it was my mom. I'd be like "mama you tripping, buy yourself a nice Tiffany piece and sit down"

But most of the attention this generates will be negative. How does this validate her or improve her life? I would imagine most people feel exacty like her son -- embarrassed for her.

Society demonizes or ignores singles while married people are validated all the time for their choices.
Maybe 30+ years ago. But not now IMO. I've been married and I've been single and I just don't feel "society' has given crap either way.

I think anymore any baggage that comes with either of these choices is brought by the individual...not society.

Other than a tax break, how does society treat one better than the other?

Sometimes your parents are thrilled when you get married; other times your parents hate your spouse and the marriage causes all kinds of conflict. Etc., etc.,
I totally agree. I don't get all this 'pressure' that you have mentioned before. Maybe it's really pressure from yourself? And if it's that bad that you can't ignore it, maybe you should move to a different city because it's definitely not like that everywhere.

Also yes this is the most ridiculous thing I've heard of. Makes her seem like she feels so incomplete because she is not married so she marries herself. I don't see how this is refreshing at all.

LOL, we dont do gift registries..that's just odd but I do feel that some of us single people make a big deal out of our bdays or do more simply because we can. We don't have families so we have more time and money. Sometimes it involves a trip. No biggie, no one is required to participate but most of us want to. I don't see bdays as milestones..its really just an excuse to celebrate even more!

That's the culture we live in now. Facebook, 24hr news, Kim Kardashian...being an "attn wh0re" is rewarding for a lot of people...

Why is same-person marriage legal, but same-sex marriage is not?

Or is it not legal nationwide?
