Good PSA.

This comment made me LOL, though:

I have a mentally handicapped cousin that used to ruthlessly pull my hair when I was between 3 and 5. I think I earned the right to use the word Retard.

Mr. Grinrich, while you're becoming indignant over some celebrity's weak attempt at humor which touched on race, Trayvon Martin is still dead, essentially for being a black kid walking down the street in his own neighborhood.

Excuse me that I don't care about your indignation.

Perhaps you'll understand why I won't let myself get sidetracked from all that Trayvon Martin's death underscores about real racial problems in this country.

i never saw that psa before.
well it's news to me that using the word retarded was the same as the n-word or all those other words.
i just thought it was wrong to call someone WITH special needs retarded....but okay to call someone with supposedly normal capabilities retarded when they're acting like they're mentally impaired.

rolls eyes and sucks teeth at having to (possibly) restrict my language.

If you're really looking at this as a "Damn, I can't call things retarded anymore," moment, then you're totally missing the point. In a way that's actually kind of impressive to me. So kudos on that.

Pro tip: if you're using a slang word or epithet that slurs an entire segment of the population, it's not okay, no matter who you're talking to. So take a look at your word choices, and decide what kind of person you are, or want to be. Are you the kind of person who is going to get pissy about not being able to use a couple of words because they slur hundreds of thousands of people?

Is that the kind of person you are? If it is, are you comfortable with that?

If so, by all means, keep using slurs, because then everyone around you will have a way to KNOW that you're that kind of person.

If not, then stop rolling your eyes because you called out on using hurtful language, recognize WHY that language is hurtful, and be a better person than to use it.

It's a handful of words. It really isn't difficult to come up with other ways to describe things you don't like.

I also thought the following might be a helpful guide. Or at least, this thread made me think of this.

Quote:
when people get mad at other people saying that something they did was racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever
I don’t get it

it’s like

If you were hanging out with your friend and your friend turns to you and says “hey I don’t know if you noticed but you just stepped on my foot, can you please stop”, I am guessing most people would say “oh man, I’m sorry” and maybe watch where they were walking a little better

You probably would NOT:
  • yell at your friend for accusing you of stepping on their foot
  • deny that you had stepped on your friend’s foot
  • argue with your friend over how you step on everyone’s feet equally, so it shouldn’t matter
  • insist that you didn’t step on their foot that hard, so it couldn’t have hurt them
  • get offended over the implication that the way you walk is wrong
  • say “okay, but what about MY foot?”
  • step on your friend’s foot more to show how it isn’t even a big deal and nobody cares about people stepping on each other’s feet anymore
  • reference that one time when your friend stepped on YOUR foot and you didn’t complain
  • tell them you didn’t mean to do it, so you’re not responsible for stepping on their foot
  • deny that your friend has a foot
and I mean sometimes the person isn’t even a friend or someone you know but that doesn’t matter, don’t ****ing step on people
Emphasis mine.

You may have a point, MichelleBFT, but the self-righteousness is a bit heavy handed.

I am sort of astounded that calling someone "retarded" is considered kind of low-level rude and not worth getting worked up about and bringing it up is what? Over reacting? IT'S RUDE. How fantastic for you that you don't have a friend or child or loved one who is, in fact, "retarded" so YOUR feelings aren't hurt when it's used as the equivalent of just plain stupid.

It's like if someone was being really really thick about not understanding something and I said, "OMG, you're being so FRAU about this!" Frau = bad thing to be which is insulting to fraus everywhere.

Hey, if calling people out on offensive language is complaining, then I'll wear that mantle. But really... see my signature.

My comment was not meant as an attack on anyone, just an observation that the thread has spun off into an entirely different debate (I don't recall naming any names, so I don't quite understand why you took this as a personal attack). I would have added an emoticon to express this, but I'm on my cell phone, which is the same reason I can't see your signature.

hey everyone, i understand that the word is offensive.

as stated before, i thought it was offensive to call someone who is mentally challenged retarded unless of course you were specifically using the word as medical description. i thought the word was okay to use as an insult, kind of like calling someone a dunce or stupid.

i got it!!
