Carmel is a city, not a food.

And they're and there/their don't sound the same when I say them. Neither do are and our. Or Dawn and Don.
My four year old daughter says "er" instead of "our." Makes me chuckle, then feel a little stabby lol
Everyone where I grew up said "are" instead of "our" and "yer" instead of "your." I'm still trying to break myself out of that habit. Really gets me when people type it out like that purposely. Also see a lot of them typing out things like "Imma goin' to the store to get me some beer." Good grief.

Also sloppy with the pronunciation of "t" in the back of the throat instead of with the tongue tip. I'm really bad about that, but I can't think of a single word offhand. Well, I guess "throat" would be an example. The ending "t" sound is in the back of my throat instead of on the tip of my tongue. Or substituting the "t" sound with a "d" sound, as in the word "substituting." When I say it aloud, I say "substituding." I'm so ashamed.

Well, I don't know anyone who pronounces it that way, either--the "pa-thetic" part.

The locals pronounce it Pa (short "a" as in "can") lo (as in lo and behold) and Al (as in "Al" Bundy) to (as in "toe").

It's usually all run together like one word: "Palowalto."

He's not trying to pronounce it "correctly" or "Spanish." He just pronounces all of his "As" that way.

Other local pronunciations: Versailles Street--locals and old-timers all purposely say, "Verrsayles." They know it's not the proper pronunciation, but there's some story behind it that I'm not familiar with.

Encinal--locals pronounce it Ensi-nell (short "i" sound, like "if"). Of course, hubs pronounces it Ensi-nALL. GAH!
Other Bay Area cities pronounced weirdly:

San Rafael
Albany

Just off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.

Although, I don't know how Albany is "supposed" to be pronounced. I just pronounce it the way I hear everyone else pronounce it!

ETA: Milipitas...I say Mill-peet-iss, accent on the "peet" because that's how everyone else says it. I'm not originally from this area. So when in Rome....

There is a street in the next city called "Sigourney" and you always know when someone is out of town by the pronunciation. It's not Sigourney, (like Sigourney Weaver) it's Sig-a-knee.

Wait, people say almond with a silent "l"? I have never heard that in my life. Weird.

I say:
Sammon
All-mond
Kar-a-mel

^That's what came to mind when she mentioned Worcester. As someone whose first language doesn't have words with such wacky pronunciations, it still doesn't make any sense (but I do pronounce it the way it's supposed to be vs. how it's written).

I was thinking that people not from NY often pronounce Houston street (the street that provides Soho with part of its name) like they would Whitney's last name.
I was surprised by the pronunciation of Greenwich when I first started learning English.

You can always tell when someone is not from Massachusetts by the way they pronounce Worcester, Leominster, Peabody & Swampscott.

Worcester's been covered, but the other three are:

LEMinstir
PEE-buh-dee
Swampskitt

Oh, that's how I say it. But, when I was there, I usually heard "Al-buh-nee," with a very flat A.

I have a slight speech impediment and a crazy baltimore-new orleans mush up accent. i know i mispronouce things. in my head it sounds right, but it comes out all wrong.

Example:
apple- sounds like apple in my head, but to others- eye-pull

This was on the VistPA facebook page today and made me giggle.

Dulce de-Licious! Set your palate for sweet because April 5 is National Caramel Day! When you give sugar a tan, it rewards you with even more sweetness lending its flavor to caramel apples, pies, pralines, nougat, brittle, or specifically, crème caramel and crème brûlée. What’s your favorite way to enjoy this sweet treat? Do you pronounce it "carmel" or “car-a-mel?" Either way, it’s all good to us!
