I read about this. I swear there's been MORE overt racism since President Obama took office.

Also, the new thing (especially in the Trayvon Martin case) is I've seen Republicans calling black people race baiters. WE'RE race baiters. Honestly, I feel like I'm getting close to the point where I can say I've heard everything.

Hateful hearted people always look for something that lets them be openly hateful.

I'm not crazy about this thread title, Eilonwy - I feel like it's unnecessarily provocative.

I see your point, Ameneris but the title didn't strike me that way. I assumed that that it was calling attention to something egregious - which it did. I can't imagine that readers of this forum would take it literally.

Well, doing stuff while being black is pretty provocative.

I changed the title and I didn't mind changing it. It's not a big deal.

Also the title didn't originally have quotation marks.

It's 2012 and the world keeps proving to me that they hate us.

No! No! No!

This is ignorance on their part.

The world does not hate you.

Please don't fall into feeling that way, no matter what the behavior of stupid people makes you think.

The world needs people of every type. Except the horribly stupid.

sorry, but white people do that anyway.
my white coworkers, outside of the work environment don't even recognize me.
i've learned not to be offended.
it doesn't matter if i've worked with a white person for 10 years, outside of the lab, i am another black person-to be avoided.

Kinda true.(not just kinda)

I have an RFID card that I have to swipe at my work and no one can get in the building without it. A woman was about five steps to the door on the other side just as I got to it and she saw me, backed up and walked backwards to her office, then when she saw me come in with the RFID card she tried to play it off going, "Good night, guys!" all cheerfully to the people down the hall to her office.

Never mind that I've worked there for 17 years.

Would you be mad at me if I said maybe she didn't recognize you are Black? (Please don't be.) So maybe race wasn't a factor in that situation, unless she knows you personally and knows you're Black. Then that would be very strange.

No, I wouldn't be mad. I would say that she may not necessarily recognized me as black but as a Person Other Than White. Probably a Scary Latina.

ETA: Even though I work for a "liberal" organization, most of the staff is white. It's weird for an organization that prides itself on its inclusivity and diversity.

I'm sorry these have been your experiences.

People are the worst, sometimes.

I will admit that on one occasion, I had quit a legal temp job literally moments before, and so just shook my head at a woman of color whom I liked when she asked me to step over and speak to her. I was in tears, and scared I'd be escorted out by security, and I just didn't want her to see the mess. I know she felt offended, and I hoped afterward that someone told her what happened. It had nothing to do with race, and everything to do with me feeling extremely overwhelmed and losing it on the job.

Obviously I can't defend white people as a whole; there are just so many insecure and ignorant morons of every stripe that no one can solely answer for their own race, creed, or color. But I will ask that if at all possible, please know that sometimes what may seem personal, is only someone in the midst of going bat**** crazy, or in a tizzy, or anything else that is all about them, and not directed negatively toward you.

I ask this humbly.

Not to negate anyone's experiences, but if I usually see someone in only one environment, I probably won't recognize them outside of it

And I know there's a huge amount of privilege in having stuff like that happen and not having it cross your mind that it's due to bigotry.

Nothing new about some Republicans calling black people and liberals race baiters. Limbaugh has been doing that for a long time.
