I almost hate to say this, but mandatory serilization of sexual offenders is not a bad idea, IMHO.
You mean more like sexual aversion training, ie A Clockwork Orange? That's what I think of. It's not that bad of an idea in theory.
Yeah, it worked out great in A Clockwork Orange.

I don't agree with mandatory sterilization. It's cruel and unusual punishment, and I doubt it works. The genitals are only a tool, these guys are sick and if they can't use one tool they will find another.

I would be all for locking them up forever, but people really throw the term sex offender around rather loosely. I would be in favor if they ensured that only the actual child rapists were locked up, not the peeping toms, the flashers, the 18 year old guys with 16 year old girlfriends, the ladies who sell dildoes in Texas.
That's what worries me too, Geeky. I agree that people who molest children need to be kept off the street, but I don't think others like you mentioned should be locked up for life or even long periods. On another thread, I posted the story of a teenager who was given 10 years in prison for having oral sex with a younger teenage girl. The ironic thing was, if he had had sex with her, he would have gotten a more lenient sentence under the law. Now his youth has been taken away from him.

But pedophiles--sick sick sick. Just because they are on a registry doesn't mean they won't be able to find more children to abuse. In my hometown there was a man who kidnapped and killed a 4 year old girl. Then he tried to change his name so that he wouldn't come up on the registry anymore (he became famous in our city). I think his request was ultimately denied, but it shouldn't even be considered.
