Default Interesting story from the Titanic (Black family on board)

Joseph Laroche Was Only Known Black Passenger On Titanic | NewsOne

I hadn't really found much interesting about the Titanic anniversary - until this story came out.

I would think it interesting without this, but my mama thinks we may have a distant family connection because we are part Haitian and Laroche is one of our family names.

Side point - it's funny they say he was the only Black passenger on board when he had his 2 kids there.

Maybe they don't consider his kids "black" per se. In the photo..looks like his wife is white or something other than black. Since he was a Frenchman..I'm guessing his wife was probably a white French woman..so his kids would be maybe considered biracial and not defaulted to black (I don't mean that in a derogatory way).

That's the only way I can explain it...

He was Haitian and Black and his wife was white and French.
Yeah, I think they are making that assumption - I just found that kind of funny, since he actually looks like a "creole" or "mixed" or "coloured" Haitian, hence why the kids look on the lighter side.

Nope! I read somewhere that he re-shot scenes from the movie when people pointed out that the stars weren't aligned the way they would have been when Titanic sank - but he never showed a Black family!

yeah, he suppose to be a perfectionist, but there are a few other plot holes in the film I will not get into. I know he cant refilm the whole movie to add this family, but it would be interesting if his story and other stories of little known blacks where better known. There are so many major histroical events, but there seem to never be any ethnic people around.

Probably a question of who was considered an "official" passenger. A black coworker of my husband's said his family has a story that's been passed down through the years about a female ancestor (a black woman) who worked as a servant in some capacity to a family who was on the Titanic and who was traveling with them on the ship. At that time, perhaps you weren't required to list servants as "official" passengers?? Assuming the story of that coworker's family was passed down accurately, perhaps there were other black servants on board who weren't listed as passengers. But beside that, amid coverage of the Titanic memorials over the weekend were reports that we'll never really know the exact number of passengers or have an accurate list of passengers because of how listing passengers was done back then.

Sad to say but when you consider the time period when this happened, people of color were just non-existant to the white press unless they were in legal trouble. Also sad to say that some things haven't changed much...

I agree with PH.

Also, there were several steerage passengers that get nary a mention, but they always seem to focus on the rich folks that went down with the ship, or made to the lifeboats.

As for James Cameron, he's a dick. I watched some History Channel show about his inaccuracies, and he was sitting around a table with various Titanic historians, and artists, etc. Great show, but at the same time, his little comments here and there made me want to just smack him. Unfortunately, I like a lot of his movies. Terminator, The Abyss, and Sanctum to mention a few.

The history of our ancestors is so poorly documented.
