Fifty Shades of Grey
Has anyone else read any of this trilogy? I heard it discussed a few times last week on the morning radio show I listen to and bought the first book this weekend. I finished reading it last night and picked up the other two books today. I also heard there are plans for a movie?

Yes. Heard about it, and have no desire to read it. All the reviews I've seen have been very poor.
Why buy it when you can read the original fanfiction online for free? Apparently the only thing that has been changed is the names, Bella and Edward to Christian and whatever.

Same here. Totally not my thing.
I hadn't heard the bit about it being Twilight fanfic.

I've heard about it from two other women. One described it as a "must read," the other described it as bordering on soft porn and not her cup of tea.

And that's exactly why it isn't my cup of tea.
But I know some women have loved it. I read something about it a few weeks ago on NPR or the NYT or someplace, and they said the title was being passed word of mouth from woman to woman, like it was some secret thing.
I guess if it's on Amazon it isn't a secret anymore.

I would say it's both. It's more graphic than a typical romance novel, but softer than some stuff I've seen by Anne Rice (I couldn't help comparing this to the Sleeping Beauty trilogy at first). Lots of discussion stuff which is why I'm hoping to find people who have read it. A few of my friends were planning to pick it up but they read really slowly (they're still working on Hunger Games).

I read it. It's better than Twilight, but it's still not good. The sex isn't super hardcore or anything, but it's maybe a little raunchier than your typical chick lit book. The main characters are pretty cardboard (but still better than Bella and Edward!).

But it is a Twilight fanfic.
That's what it was first written as. The story line may not follow twilight, but it was written as Bella and Edward fanfiction with some BDSM thrown in.
Which you know, is fine, if that's your thing But I just don't see the need to pay to read fanfiction.

I read the first two and am currently reading the third.
I also heard it was Twilight fanfic, however, there aren't any supernatural beings in this. No vampires, no werewolves, no witches, blah blah blah. There really is no Jacob, either. At least not someone that the main male character is fighting over for 'the girl.' The author TRIES to mimic the 'needing' that Bella and Edward had for each other, but the girl in this series, Ana, TO ME, is much stronger than Bella. She defies the main male character, Christian. She does what she wants in some scenes, he gets mad, but she still shows that she's kind of her own person. For whatever reason, I didn't see this strength in Bella.
The only thing that I can see a similarity with is that the male character is very controlling of the female character. Not only in a sexual way (since it seems to start off having a BDSM type of theme, but to me, it goes way in the other books). He's jealous, possessive, and obsessive about her. That's pretty much the only simliarities I see between Christian Grey and Edward. they both want to control just about every thing she does; who she talks to, where she travels, etc. Ana is followed by Christian's bodyguards, as Bella is followed by Alice or whomever.
I can see how it started as fanfic, but quickly changed.
The writing does seem a little juvenile and very repetitive. She blushes a lot. The arguements between the couple seem to be the same stuff..."Don't leave me." "I'll never leave you." The next day, "I thought if I told you the truth about the so and so, you'd leave me..." "No, I told you I'd never leave you." I glossed over a few pages when this seemed to be the recurring conversation.
I enjoyed reading it. It is sort of an erotic novel, soft porn, whatever. However, not nearly as bad as some of the other's I've read, including the Anne Rice Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. THOSE were pretty hard, IMO. It kind of reminded me of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books in terms of the sexual content and scenes, but of course, without the vampires.
At any rate, they were a quick read for me, and I really did like the story line. Again the writing was a little, meh. But when I am looking for a quick read, I am ok with that. If I know it's a book that I seriously need to pay attention to, the writing NEEDS to be better.
