Thanking a proffesor
I had an english proffesor along time ago. She really helped me with my essay writing skills. I took the GRE and got a 4.5/6 on the essay portion. I used the methods she taught me and I feel I owe the 4.5 to her. how can I thank her? Is an email ok, or should I write a letter? If I could I would fly to her and thank her personally.
I am also teaching my GRE study group her method and they also have excelled!
Whats the best way to say thank you?
TIA!

I'd send a handwritten letter. I think it means a lot when someone takes the time to sit and write one out.

I like the handwritten letter idea. I'd also have someone proofread it since she is an English professor.
Siri types my posts for me.

No. just as long you you dont have horribel mispelled words that makes you the grader confused, they let it slide.
But I proofread before submitting my essays, unlike here where I seldom if ever do.

Sorry! It was yelling at me...
I figure an English professor might be a stickler for spelling...

A lot of your posts are like that, which is why I suggested a proofreader for your thank you note.
I'm not sure about the etiquette, but I think a personal, informal one is nice.

I know that the instructor's at my college looooovvvveeee letters from their students. They love to see the end products of their efforts and know that they made a difference in someone's life. Being an instructor/professor is sometimes a very thankless job. They only tend to hear the bad stuff from frustrated students and they see a lot of people fall through the cracks, so seeing someone make it is very meaningful to them.
I think an informal letter would be more touching to them because it's more personal. This is a personal thing for you, so a personal, informal letter would probably be something very heartwarming to them, too.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.
No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

This is what I got so far. I feel perhaps I should get a blank card and put it in.
I’m unsure if you remember me, but I was a student of yours in the spring of 2009 for English 1158.
I want to express my sincerest gratitude for helping me improve my essay writing skills. I wish I had the chance to thank you in person for being such a fantastic teacher.
Specifically, I would like to thank you for showing me techniques to improve my writing and making writing essays so much easier. This became important and extremely beneficial when taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) this pass fall. Using the methods, taught by you, I was able to score a 4.5 out of a possible score of 6.
While, I have not yet met all necessary requirements to attend veterinarian school, I feel this score will help me become a more competitive applicant. I will forever be grateful! Thank you so very much!!

If you want to get really picky about it...
Using the methods, taught by you, I was able to score a 4.5 out of a possible score of 6.
is an example of passive voice. And passive voice should only be used when the object is more significan than the subject.
So bc this is a letter to thank her (and not the methods), a cleaner iteration would be:
Using the methods you taught, I was able to score a 4.5 out of a possible score of 6.

thanks for pointing that out. In her class I alsways wrote in passive wrote, she would shake her head and say, "you are such a scientist!" I still have problems with writing active rather then passive.
