Didn't the WH just say that Joe Biden's remarks were his personal opinion and not the WH?? They kinda threw him under the bus last week and now this.

This really wasn't a good time for this. It could really hurt him in swing states. I knew several people who were on the fence in 2004 and went with Bush just because of the gay marriage issue. The gay marriage amendment was also on the ballot in Ohio at the time and won like 60/40. Dumb, dumb, dumb, Obama. *That comes 100% from a political perspective. I'm an Obama supporter who admires this personally, but I also know what voters in states like mine are like.

Yea I'm surprised he is doing this now. I figured he'd come out and do the real work after he secured the second term.

I think it'll help him.
Yes, it will alienate some voters, but I feel as though it will strengthen the support and loyalty from others. I doubt that many people extremely against same sex marriage were seriously thinking about supporting him anyway. Those on the fence will have a choice to make just like they did last time.
He knows it's campaign season. His campaign managers, advisers, political analysts, publicist, and everyone else employeed by the White House know this as well. I'm sure they carefully decided to announce this and have done plenty of studies, polls, etc on the outcome.

I think the whole acceptance of gay marriage would do good for the youth, since I personally believe and from my own personal experience, that the majority of us are in support of gay marriage. But I think it'll harm older and more conservative generations who were on the fence.
Personally, I am happy that he supports gay marriage, but I'm not sure how this will work for him this year

I agree with greenjumper. As someone who actively works in his campaign, I can tell you that we are very proud that he has made these remarks.
Those who are against gay marriage are not normally Obama supporters anyway. It has energized his core supporters.
Just because he is personally for gay marriage doesn't mean gay people will be getting married soon. But it does let them know they have a president who gets it and realizes the importance of this civil right.

I think it'll hurt him more than help him, at least here in uber-religious-conservative-land (in which I live in general disharmony with the crowd). It'll be his re-election campaign's death knell.

A country who is concerned with the sex of the person you are partnered with, while it's population is dying from being overfed but malnourished, while it's air, water and food source is being polluted, while it's economy is in the toilet, really has it's priorities completely messed UP!!
How much further backwards do we have to go here?
Thank goodness there is at least someone saying something that goes against the evil moronic idiots who think they have a right to tell others how to live their lives.

I hate to say it but I thought the same exact thing. I mean I like to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe after discussions with family and friends..his mind had changed. But the timing seems..ehh a little too convenient. I mean he's had a long time now to consider this..and he could have been told the country he supports gay marriage.
I still prefer him over Romney though.
In other news though NC put a ban on gay marriage. Guess none of them talked with family and friends.....or maybe they did!

Hahahaha "More than anything else, I care about keeping gay people from marrying" What the christ...
Anyway I'm pretty sure the Obama campaign has some terrific strategists behind it. Obama's just not going after the people who care that much about banning gay marriage.

I can't imagine he was against gay marriage to begin with. He just does what's politically expedient. And since the GOP has been taken over by the far right, I can accept political expedience if it keeps the extremists in check.

This may be a little silly but I was just thinking that since older people are usually a large group do not support same sex marriage and younger people are usually in support of it....4 years of more older people dying and more younger people becoming 18 or older may help some. As well as 4 more years of positive media portrayal of same sex couples in general (Ellen D, popular TV shows with gay couples, more and more people "coming out", more social acceptance) Idk, just a thought.
I was also under the impression that he supported gay marriage but he just couldn't say so / was advised against saying so.
Who knows, maybe they just made Biden into the guinea pig! Lol

Yes, agreed. However, I'm afraid that his comments may alienate some who are on the fence. Maybe I don't give people (read: moderate conservatives) enough credit, but, sad to say, I do think this might push some of those types over to the red.
On the other hand, I am BEYOND thrilled that the President is throwing his support behind this cause. I think it's exciting that he just took that stand - no second guessing it, no political statements around it, just "This is what I believe and this is why". Awesome.
