Default Lockets - Anyone own or ever buy one?

I am thinking about buying a locket for my mother for her birthday. Every time I ask her what she wants/needs she says pictures. I have done the picture & frame gift to death & need a new idea.

I went to a jewelry store today & looked through a catalog. They had quite a few heart shaped that I liked. The problem with these is that you have to cut the picture in a heart shape as well and since it will be a small picture part of my face will probably be cut.

They have the oval shaped lockets as well. The good thing with these is that the pictures can be bigger. They had a couple I liked but none that said something like "I love you" or "Mom".

Anyone own a locket or ever buy one? If so, what shape? Do they even make good gifts? I am all out of ideas!

I have two oval shaped. You can always get one with a smooth back and have it engraved.

I have one, but never wear it. Not even sure if there is a picture in it.

Along the lines of the photos & jewelery idea though, last year for Mothers day I gave my Grandmother a bracelet with photos of all the grand kids. She wears it a lot and says people are always asking to see it

Something like this....

I bought a locket for my best friend for her 16th birthday. I went to a store called "Things Remembered" in the mall-- I opted for the oval one for the same reasons you mentioned, and you could engrave whatever you wanted on it. I had her initials engraved on the front and a sentimental message on the back. The necklace also came with a free "jewelry box" that they engraved with her initials with the purchase. You may be able to find a similar deal at a silver shop in the mall where you are.

To get the correct size pictures I went to a Perfect Photo and told them what I needed it for. I had traced the size of the oval on a piece of paper and gave them the pictures I wanted. It only cost a few bucks and the guy put several sizes of the picture on each photo sheet to choose from... all in all it worked out really well.

Good luck!

Love the bracelet.

I sold jewelry for a long time - unless you mom is seriously into hearts, don't get it. They are notoriously hard to fit for pics. Oval is the better choice for picture options - easier to fit and make changes over time.

Now you made me want a locket! Here are some I found that I like:

I do not like heart shaped jewelry - never have. I think the oval shape would be the easiest to fit a picture into, so I'd probably go with that, but I really like this one as well:

Thank you. Now I'm beginning to wonder if it would be better to just get a plain polished one like this:

http://www.heartsmith.com/erin.html

Either way, I'd get sterling silver rather than any kind of gold. Cheaper, and less of a chance that I'd be allergic to the metal. I really like the marcasite one I posted (second one), but marcasite has a tendency to chip, and pieces fall out. The first one - the onyx one - was my first choice, cause it looks really different, but I'd be afraid it would look too trendy and I'd grow out of it.

Decisions, Decisions! I guess I'd have to try some on before I made a decision!
