I cannot find mine either. I gave up. Ours sound similar.

Yep, we could wear anything we wanted as long as it wasn't obscene.

In junior high we wore a school T-shirt and blue drawstring basketball shorts. I think I only took one semester of gym in junior high and switched to dance and had to wear a leotard. And I did JROTC in early high school so I had to wear an Air Force uniform. Later in high school, in a different state, I took a wildlife course instead of gym.

Wow! A wildlife course instead of gym? That sounds terrific.
In high school, one of our gym teachers was an alcoholic who always wore dark glasses. One day when we were practicing archery, she got confused and had some of us retrieve our arrows while others were still shooting. Hjinks ensued.
I heard she was a great skier.

Middle school: red mesh shorts and this awful, thick reversible shirt. Everything was bought from the school and had the school logo. They replaced the shirts with plain t-shirts with the school logo. We could wear any sweatshirt or sweatpants with it when the weather was cold, and anything other than athletic shoes was a dress cut.
High school was the same (PE is only required in California for the first 2 years) save for a mesh shirt and everything in the school colors, blue and white. I mean, it was all really ugly but not awful, and I kept the shorts to work out in.

What if you have a really long torso? The one-piece romper deal seems super uncomfortable. Especially during the gymnastics unit. How do you do a back bend in a polyester romper???? Frontal wedgie anyone??

^^i did not have to worry about that. I was trying to not get hit by flying objects. Gym was not my best class.

Oh, not to worry...there was PLENTY of extra fabric built into the bloomer bottoms to do any sort of athletic maneuver you could imagine. VERY roomy in the tushy.

Yeah, ours were wicked stretchy. And you stepped in through the neck. How crazy is that?

Oh my Lord, that is hilarious! Ours were definitely roomy all over. They zipped up the front though.
I slept in that thing for probably 10 years - ugly, yes, but comfy!

No. We had a dress code though: blue gym shorts, white t-shirt and tube socks.

Gymsuits, what a nightmare. Ours were a bit like RCW's only the bloomers were not as far down your legs. They snapped up the front, so if you were busty (which I was not!) you tended to pop the snaps. They were cotton and had no stretch at all and wrinkled horribly. To top it off, they were a really ugly shade of green.
We wore them through high school. Horrible.
(I was very unathletic, but I could climb the rope to the top!)

Ours were identical. Great description. Whoever invented them (a man I'm sure) needs a good swift kick. : )

No gymsuits..LOL! I went to private schools. We had to wear sweatpants and sweatshirts. In warm weather we could wear t-shirts and sweat shorts that came mid thigh. It was preferred that no pictures or words were on them but any sports team was allowed. I wore NY Giants gear a lot!

I keep reading this as "Did you have to wear a jumpsuit[...]" and imagining stuff like this in gym:
DSQUARED2 trouser dungaree

No, we just had to change into athletic pants/shorts and a t-shirt or sweatshirt and sneakers. I graduated HS in 2002. My husband had a gym uniform in middle school, though, and we're the same age.

No gymsuit here--another NYC kid. We had to bring gym clothes to school and I usually wore an oversized t-shirt and leggings (late 80s/early 90s...). But I guess our school did sell gym t-shirts because Ad Rock famously wore one in a video. He was there a few years before me, though.
