Geez, I guess we did, too, but I don't remember that detail, since I was usually still in the locker room, fighting with my lock.

I just got a visual of you in the locker room swearing at your locker while dressed in the sad gym romper wanna be suit.

Oh, it so was dark and smelly in there, too. I always had to go get the gym teacher (much to her annoyance) to help me. She wore a friggin' whistle, which she'd blow to stop whatever else was going on before she marched into the locker room to undo my lock, yet again.
How come recess, which involved athletics, was so much more fun and productive? And how many years did the President's Physical Fitness standard prevail? I think I remember flopping onto the ground like a walrus after doing as many pushups as possible (which wasn't many).
Games were fun, but feats of endurance were hellish.

We had to line up by height for gym glass. I was #4. #3 and I would be partners for the physical fitness tests so we could cheat, since neither of us could do anything. We'd count our situps, pushups, etc like this 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 22, 30. : )
#3 died a long time ago but I remember her fondly.

I always imagined the President at the time signing off on this order, with a grim, depression-era "we had it rougher" expression on his face.

Somehow I have the idea it was JFK who started the fitness standards? Is that right? I remember doing lousy at most of them, but after a bit of practice I could do the situps. Was one of them the bent-arm hang? I think I used to fall right off after a few seconds.
I was the short kid with glasses who was close to the last one picked for any team. Softball was the worst. I preferred basketball even though I was short. Why did we only do archery for one day? I would have liked to do that for a month.

I remember they changed the fitness standards when I was in high school. Before that it was like some sort of pass/fail. You either did the required number of whatever it was or you didn't. At some point, they changed it to "do as many situps as you can in 60secs" and they recorded it. I don't think you passed or failed, you just reported what you did and some people got a special certificate. I never got it. *shrug*

Ours was a stretchy one piece bloomer thingy with snaps down the front. It looked like two pieces, navy on the bottom and navy and gray horizontal stripes on the top portion.
I was athletic but I hated 7th grade gym. We were required to shower and I remember being shocked at the brazen nakedness of some girls. I was modest having no sisters and only brothers, I guess.
I remember we had a few weeks of trampolining and the student teacher fell off and broke her arm.
We had a course on first aid and it was gory. Also had sex ed and it was very technical!

None for me. Thank heavens, gym was bad enough.
The best was 7th grade, when they were renovating the locker rooms and we didn't have to change at all.
