Did you have to wear a gymsuit in junior high/high school?

What did it look like?

Ugh. Mine was one piece, designed to look like separates, for some odd reason. Navy blue on the bottom, sky blue on the top. Horrible. Horrible.

(of course, kids barely have gym now)

rileyb 05-15-2012 10:17 AM

Mine was navy blue sweatpants, a royal blue polo shirt and a navy blue sweatshirt. We looked like crayons.

xcptnl 05-15-2012 10:33 AM

Mine was also one piece. Think romper suit. Navy on the bottom and navy/white striped up top. FUGLY!!

And the neck got all stretched out putting it on as no zipper or buttons. Why? Why???

We could always buy the school t-shirt/sweatshirt/shorts/sweatpants and wear those to gym. But we also had the option of wearing any type of other athletic type clothing for gym.

I visted my high school recently and the school garb they sell is pretty fly! I wish they would have had stuff like that available when I was enrolled there as a student. People now ask me to buy certain pieces for them when I go home. Nice.

Back when, it was pretty basic.

But no, we never had any kind of romper or "suit." Come on, it was NYC. LOL

Lucky! I just read a hilarious quote about NYC. Something like "We won't judge your lifestyle but we will judge your shoes."

Middle school- Red two piece short set. With the school name and mascot (ram) and our names on it. it doubled as team sports uniforms for anyone in sports.

High school- none.

It was polyester, so it didn't breathe, and therefore created lots of sweat, which showed as lovely rings in the armpits.

They came in "shorts" variety, but ours were bloomers. Yeah! Lucky us! The worst part...we had no school uniforms, so when we went to other schools for basketball and field hockey games, we wore the bloomers. The other schools laughed at us. :(

We wore the bloomers from 4th through 8th grade. Girls only. Boys could wear normal shorts.

I was so happy to go to high school and leave the bloomers behind. We had no specific uniform in high school, other than having to wear something "athletic".

Middle school was blue cotton shorts and a blue cotton t-shirt with our school's name. You could also just wear plain blue shorts and t-shirt, but I didn't already own those and the school's seperates were only $10 a piece. We couldn't wear sweatshirts or anything over the uniform, which sucked when they made us play field hockey in November.

In high school we could wear whatever shorts, t-shirts, sweatpants or sweatshirts we wanted as long as they didn't have any logos or designs (other than the school logo, but barely anyone bought the school t-shirts or sweatshirts).

It was the same type of unisex outfit for both middle school and high school: a school T-shirt with dark sweat shorts. You could use dark sweatpants instead, and you could also wear a dark long-sleeved shirt under the T-shirt. Any religiously required garments were also permitted.

Of course you had boys trying to sag with their sweat shorts, and girls rolling up their waistbands to make booty shorts and cutting their T-shirts into tanks.

My mom also had to wear this for gym, complete with bloomers. This was during the '70s, so it's pretty weird that they hadn't updated the girls' uniform yet.

I graduated 8th grade in 1976...and my school used the bloomers well into the early 1980's.

LadyV69 05-15-2012 11:33 AM

Nope. Like, Spidey said, a gymsuit wasn't required in NYC. We did have to bring in sweatpants, sneakers and T-shirts from home, though. We weren't that lucky.

claudine19 05-15-2012 11:38 AM

Apparently, I had the same hellish one piece as springcurl. It was also my first experience with a lock and locker, and oh, was it horrible. To this day, I still hate combination locks.

We had to climb ropes. I could not climb a rope.

Ack! The horror! Ours were light yellow. Yellow! *shudder*

I couldn't climb the rope either. I think I was the only one who couldn't.

The boys could, but the girls struggled.

I can't believe I can't find a picture of the type of suit we wore.

Yep, ours were a greenish blue cotton and they wrinkled like mad. This was in the early 70's and it was quite possibly the ugliest thing I've ever worn (and believe me, I wore some ugly stuff in the 80's). And we had to wear blinding white sneakers and whiten them with shoe polish every week.
It was all just downright hideous. Add that to the fact I was short, skinny, totally unathletic and you have someone who absolutely detested gym class through and through.
Thank goodness in Senior high we could choose from a wide variety of classes and wear whatever we wanted. Probably the only reason I graduated.

PartyHair 05-15-2012 03:13 PM

We had to wear a powder blue one piece romper that was solid blue on the bottom and blue and white striped on top. REALLY awful.

By the time I got to sophomore year, they'd done away with the rompers in favor of those horrid coach's shorts with a school tee-shirt. Our colors were orange and black. We had to wear orange shorts. The top could be orange, black, or white but had to be the official school-sanctioned tee-shirt.

I look at our yearbook pics and say, "WTF?"

KurlyKae 05-15-2012 03:25 PM

Just freshman year of high school. After that, they let us wear any sweatpants or athletic type shorts with a tee shirt or sweatshirt. What we had that one year was polyester black shorts with gold/yellow trim, and a reversible shirt, gold in one side, black on the other. That was so that we could dress as teams during class, which never happened.

My daughter' schools use gym uniforms now (imagine my surprise, DD1 did not have that in NJ.). Shorts and t-shirts sold through the school. There is a place on each to write their names, and a picture of the mascot. If you don't want to buy through the school, you can get plain but similarly colored items elsewhere.
