Just got the 30G iPod with video! Question re uploading

How do I upload my non-iTunes music to my iPod? I have quite a few music files on my computer, that I'd like to transfer to my iPod.

Also, where can I get shows to watch on it? Do they need to be purchased through iTunes?

If you'd like to share any other usage tips with me, I'd really appreciate it. I know nothing about iPods. Thanks.
I moved all of my non-itunes music into my i-tunes music folder. Then I go to i-tunes and select add folder or some similar option. Then everything is there. You can also search for the files and add them from wherever they already are but I find keeping them all in one place to be easiest. After they are in itunes, plug in your i-Pod and it should auto update.

So far, the only way that I know to get videos on there is from i-tunes but I know that tech savy people can convert videos from other places to upload.

You have three steps. 1. rip the dVd onto your computer then 2. convert to ipod format 3 add it to your ipod library.

step on: You can search for many free softwares. use this one

Step two: convert to ipod: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

Step three: open itune file, import, then choose file.

steps 1 and 2 take about 2 hours all together

I'm assuming those step by step directions are for getting movies from my dvds?

For music off a CD, just pop in the CD, and Itunes will ask you if you want to import the music. Say yes. Once imported, the music will be sync'ed onto your iPod, or you can do it manually by clicking 'File - Sync Medussa's iPod".

For audio files on your harddrive, use "File - Import".

Itunes automatically grabbed all my pics and sync'ed them onto my iPod without even checking that this was something I wanted to do so if that happens to you and you don't want them on your iPod, from within iTunes, you can go to 'Medussa's iPod", and from there customize what folders of music, videos, pics, etc are sync'ed onto your iPod.

Podcasts are regular audio and/or video broadcasts. You can setup itunes to download any you like for you regularly. You can either search for them by going to the Itunes store from within Itunes, or find them through search engines like:
http://podcasts.yahoo.com/

A couple of new ones I found and like are:
60-second science
TEDtalks - I just watched one from July (31st I think) where a touch sensitive computer of the future like the one in Minority Report was demonstrated. I want one!

Other than those, I get a lot of news, economic and language broadcasts.

You can just do a search on your interests and see what turns up.

I haven't tried ripping dvds onto mine.

Enjoy!

I forgot to add, another good video podcast is: Comedy Central Standup.

I'm really frustrated because the iPod isn't really user friendly. There's no manual. You go to the site and download iTunes. It automatically transfers all of your music files, without the option of selecting certain songs. So, since I can't figure how to do that, I'm going to transfer all the songs and work on deleting the ones I don't want.

Anyone have idiot-proof instructions on how to do that? Thanks!
http://www.ilounge.com/ This site was really good for helping me get started with my iPod. I had a mini first and I swear it came with a manual so I was a little irritated that my new one did not.

Do you have the music organized in "playlists" yet?

You should do that first and then you can select certain playlists to add to the Ipod.
Does that make sense?
I've also found that you should make sure you have artist AND album titles for the songs you're putting on your iPod! If you're putting in CDs, this is taken care of automatically. I just know that there were several audio files from the old school Napster that I had to go back and edit the info, since they were extremely hard to find. Some of the files weren't even the right title, which made it even harder.

I also found that songs I have on my computer outside of iTunes I am able to drag and drop into whatever playlists I have in the playlist area. And I do reccomend playlists - keeps everything nice and neat, and makes it easier to find songs!
3B Corkscrew... I'm back on the boards now! Just got The Big Chop on Monday, pics coming soon.

Did you figure it out yet?
Nope. Haven't had the time today. We had a 2 hour playdate and then music class, at the library. But I did chat with my older sis, who gave me the same advice as LadyCurlyLocks. She told me to make sure everything is named. And like Chakra posted, create playlists. Sis is calling me tonight to walk me through it.

It's funny because I was a little overwhelmed when my husband gave me the iPod on Thurs night. First, I didn't know he was getting me one, then I panicked at all the tech-type stuff I'd have to learn to do. I finally got the nerve to open up everything yesterday.
