I have a bunch of the Old Navy Perfect Khaki shorts in the 3.5" inseam:

3.5" sounds short, but I'm short so it works out The 5" inseam hits me in a weird spot on my legs. I also have a bunch of their Bermuda shorts:

I pretty much live in these shorts in the summer.

I'm 37.

My comments were generalized, and made before you entered the thread. No one said, 'HC is a big ol' skank!!!!'

But, hey, I'll let it slide. It's Saturday and maybe your coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

It's implied, and, yes, is carried over from the old thread and also possibly you read my reply to spiderlashes yesterday, but I'll let further argument of that slide because I have a big assignment due tonight, and I have already spent more time with this than I should have. And, because all you have to do is keep saying "Nuh, uh, did not!" So, happy Saturday all!

HC, didn't see a convo between you and SL yesterday.

Um, uh, well, huh, sorry.

Not sure where all the acrimony is coming from...

I'm 49 and the shortest I will go anymore is 5 inches. I can pull off a shorter 3.5" length if all I wanted to do is stand around or walk. That length hits me on a very flattering part on my thigh, that is, until I sit down, then all bets are off.

I do think there comes a point in one's 40s where anything shorter than 3 inches for shorts and skirts/dresses does not look age-appropriate. It matters little whether or not you have great looking pins. Just my opinion.

Just curious, though, if you don't know I'm in my 40s, and you see me walk by in my 2" shorts, does that still count? I can't be walking around worrying how old everyone is and if they're dressed age-appropriately or whether anyone thinks I am or not. It's really no different than those with straight hair who think we with curly hair should straighten it because it's unruly or unprofessional or distracting or just ugly. Or, those who think that we over 40 should head down to the salon for the Sofia Petrillo special (from the Golden Girls).

I'll reiterate what I've said in the past: showing too much skin is not a good look at any age. The "too much" part is where we all seem to disagree. The middle part of my thighs is no different than the lower part of my thighs, IMO, and that's where my 2" shorts hit me--almost in the middle. I have trim, muscular thighs, not the big juicy thighs so many women have and I would kill to have, so that may make a bit of difference. I don't fill my shorts out the way a curvier woman does.

I'm simply encouraging the OP to do what works for her and her own personal comfort zone--that can be done without taking jabs at others. If society and its rules had their collective way, I'd be in a moo-moo and sensible shoes with my hair cut up to my ears "aging gracefully."

Of course, if one chooses to poke at the nest, expect a few wasps to fly out.

I think what's coming across is you sounding defensive when others have an opinion that's different from yours on this subject. I'm not trying to sound confrontational, but I do think you may need to lighten up a little. We're just talking about shorts. lol I also don't feel the type of pressure you feel to chop all my hair off and live in muu-muus and sensible shoes simply because I'm in my 40s.

But I do think at a certain point skirts, dresses, and shorts should be worn a bit longer. I accept that I'm growing older and choose to do so gracefully and fashionably. Again, that's just my opinion.

I do not care how old you are if you look good in them where them. My problem is when I see cheeks and the underline of your bottom. Oh and if you have a jelly belly watch out with some shorts. LOL!!! It is all about what looks good on the individual.

The shortest I'll go is about 4 inches above the knee. I'm 46 so it's partly my age that dictates length and partly my weight. I'm a little heavier than I like and my legs aren't as toned as usual. Two years ago, I would have said mid-thigh. Until I was 40-ish, I probably would have said anything but booty shorts.
I wear dresses all summer long so I can avoid shorts.

I think in general our society needs a little more modesty.

Leggings that look like pantyhose - no.
Clothes so tight that we can count your rolls like we would count a tree's rings - no.
Shorts so short that "the world is your gynecologist" - please no.

At home/in private - do whatever.
In public - a little modesty, please.

My short ones are mid-thigh and long ones (cargo shorts) are just above the knee. No idea their length.

I agree on the showing of your cheeks, really, I don't want to see them.

I'm 39 and petite. I wear mostly mid-thigh shorts. If I had fantastic legs (mine are decent up to mid-thigh, then things get a little dicier, lol), I would probably wear shorter shorts, no matter my age. In my next life, I hope I have legs up to my chin.

Golden, we're about the same age. My rule has always been, if I can't bend over or sit down, my shorts are too short. I'm almost 5'3" and until this thread, never took note of inseams when it came to shorts (I only did that with pants). For the purpose of this thread, I went and measured my shorts. They have 4", 3.5", and 3" inseams. I think the 3" ones look just peachy, but as Silvercurls pointed out, they can ride up when I sit down and I hate that. I still wear them, but not in mixed company.

This model is wearing the longest pair of shorts I own, but they don't look like this on me.

These are your longest, though?
(I kid, I just couldn't wear any shorter than that myself, assuming I wore shorts.)
