shorts: how short is too short?

I'm short and 24. I prefer bermuda, but the shortest I'll go is 5".

I am 37 years old. I wear this length to the gym.

Actually, the gym is the only place I wear shorts. I would rather wear a dress or skirt.

I don't like wearing shorts because I have a lot of cellulite on the backs of my legs. It's due to being undermuscled and not eating clean enough. I am eating better and working out 3 times a week with a personal trainer to increase my muscle mass.
27 and I wear as short as I can without my butt hanging out. booyah
Speck, I think your shorts are cute on you! And trust me, I don't allow a bit of cellulite, stretchmark, or flab deter me from wearing my shorts. Houston is too hot for clothes!

I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.
I agree with others about shorter shorts being a pain when sitting. The two or three pairs that I have that are shorter look good when I am standing (and my legs are probably my best body part) but I hate how they ride up when I sit.

They look to hit you at about the same place. The real difference is how much tighter they look on that model. Really, I think they put her in a size too small. She would look awkward walking. Plus she's wearing heels, which elongate the legs.
These are your longest, though?
(I kid, I just couldn't wear any shorter than that myself, assuming I wore shorts.)
And yeah, you have a nice bod.

I lied, I do own two pairs of cargo shorts, much like these, but they don't fit me anymore:

The other model does look like she'd be uncomfortable walking, doesn't she?

I googled Gap Clean Front Shorts and it appears that they're supposed to fit the way they model is wearing them. I'm actually more comfortable with the fit I have, but out of curiosity I went and looked at the tags on my shorts (I still haven't worn any of them) and not only are they not petite, like I thought they were, but they have a 3 1/2" inseam. I find that very strange because the shorts are now advertised as Gap Canvas Shorts and the inseams are only available in regular: 4", tall: 5", petite: 3".
Golden, we're about the same age. My rule has always been, if I can't bend over or sit down, my shorts are too short. I'm almost 5'3" and until this thread, never took note of inseams when it came to shorts (I only did that with pants). For the purpose of this thread, I went and measured my shorts. They have 4", 3.5", and 3" inseams. I think the 3" ones look just peachy, but as Silvercurls pointed out, they can ride up when I sit down and I hate that. I still wear them, but not in mixed company.

This model is wearing the longest pair of shorts I own, but they don't look like this on me.

Thanks for all the responses!

To clarify, I am tall, 5' 9" and have a 32" inseam. The shorts in question have a 4" inseam, which means there's a lotta leg showing when I wear them, but no pocket hang-out, no cheekies showing, no "the world is my gyno", which is my new favorite classification of short-shorts!!!

I have gained some tummy weight and some all over weight, but I am not overweight; I've always been skinny-mini until the last couple of years. My legs are still great while the rest of me has gone to pot, imo!

I wore the shorts yesterday to do errands around town, with a fitted, but loose t-shirt with a respectable (read modest) neckline, and no one stared or gave me dirty looks and I was totally comfortable. The only sitting I did was in my SUV so no one saw me sitting but my kids.

So I have come to this decision: I will wear them when I want to but that won't be to neighborhood BBQ's or church picnics, just errands, the pool, the lake, on the walking trail, around the house type of thing.

Medussa, you look wonderful! I still have no curves: I am built more like a man, my waist is almost as big as my hips, always has been, no matter what my weight. NOT FAIR!!!
Golden, thanks! Hey, did I ever welcome you back? If not, welcome back! Did you leave us to have all those babies? I don't recall you having kids. Or maybe you had only one when you were posting regularly? It kills me that my memory is not as sharp as it used to be.

And as for the shorts, I say if you dig 'em, keep 'em.
Those shorts look great on you. That is the where the shorter ones I have fall on me as well.

They're too short if people can tell that you're not a natural blonde or redhead.
I say that if I can see your FUPA, then your shorts are too short. Otherwise, wear what you want. Personally, I rarely wear shorts. At 50, the world really doesn't need to see my legs.

Medussa is a freak of nature. 4 kids? Really? I do not believe that for a minute...
This season I plan to wear shorts for the first time in 8 years. I'm 38.

I bought these ones.

4 1/2" NOTCH BACK DENIM SHORTS at Express

I thought I was being daring, but reading through this thread, I guess they are quite modest. They are a 4.5 inch inseam, and I am only 5 ft.This thread is inspiring me to try on some shorter ones!

I don't like seeing people's butt cheeks but otherwise, go as short as you want.

My league is having a car wash and everyone's either wearing a bathing suit or shorts with a bikini top. No one wants to see my cottage cheese thighs so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I've been joking I'm going to show up in one of those bathing suits from the 1890s with bloomers and a long skirt.
