shorts: how short is too short?
I am 41 and recently bought a pair of shorts with reservations. Hubby says they are not too short (of course, he's male) but I don't know for sure yet.
How old are you and what's the shortest shorts inseam you'd wear in public?

42 and midthigh or so. 5-7 inch inseam? No way in hell I'm wearing those 2 inch inseam ones. That looks too adolescent (or too desperate) for me.

I prefer 10-12 inch - Bermuda style shorts. I think I have 2 pairs that are 7 inch. That is as short as I would go.
51 yrs old.
Sent from my iPhone using CurlTalk. Siri may be typing for me.

My work shorts are Bermuda length. I do like that length.

I don't wear shorts at all, but I loathe seeing shorts where the pockets are sticking out of the pant legs. Why some women treat that like it's an appealing, fashionable look is beyond me. Too short!
If I were to wear shorts, I agree with mid-thigh. I hate wearing clothes that make me feel like I can't move as freely as usual.

I've been searching for Bermuda shorts because it seems like a respectable length for my age, plus I think it would flatter my body type more.

Yeah, the pockets sticking out of the pants is not good. It's sorta trashy, IMO.

I have a bunch of the Old Navy Perfect Khaki shorts in the 3.5" inseam:
3.5" sounds short, but I'm short so it works out The 5" inseam hits me in a weird spot on my legs. I also have a bunch of their Bermuda shorts:
I pretty much live in these shorts in the summer.
I'm 37.

There was a lengthy thread on the subject a few months ago. Not just pertaining to shorts, but clothes and age in general.

I think a nicely tailored crisp pair of shorts with a 3" inseam can work. I am petite and 34 years old and wear fairly short shorts but not to where anything is showing. If in doubt try some on and see how they fit. I don't think all shorter shorts are made equally.
I like the ones divegirl posted.

I'm 20, and I like mid-thigh or bermuda shorts. But, I'm also on the shorter side, so what's mid-thigh on me is much shorter on other people!

I'm 46 and I rarely wear shorts in public, but when I do, I have several pairs of 2" inseamers, and they're really not as short as they look on the hanger. I'm definitely not desperate or trying to look adolescent...I've just got the legs to pull it off. They're the only feature I have worth showing off--I work hard on my legs in my workouts. I don't look desperate--my amazing 52-yr-old husband is gorgeous (to me), so, not looking for a man--and I don't "look 46." That said, I mostly only wear them around the house or only if I go somewhere really casual like the beach with my man or on really hot days, of which we have a scant few. I bought a pair of 5" shorts the other day and they were acceptable.
Aw...don't hate, RCC...I know you're directing your comment toward me...we each assign age-appropriateness to things based on our "values" and insecurities. They don't just "come" that way. Someone posted a pic of Halle Berry wearing 2" shorts and she looked casual, comfy...did you think she looked desperate? It's about what's flattering and comfortable on YOU, not what society thinks is age-appropriate.
Also, RCC, society says you're too old to wear long hair, so better make an appt to get that cut off before someone deems you desperate and adolescent.
Goldencurly, if your husband is proud to be seen with you at age 41 in your 2" inseam shorts, and you're comfortable in them, then that says it all for me--rock 'em girly! I just wouldn't pair it with a revealing or tight top--at any age. I always wear a fitted tee or something loose-ish, or long-sleeved. No plunging necklines either anything sleeveless with them, either. No cheek, no camel-toe, no muffin top--those are my deal-breakers with shorts. I also wear flats with them 98% of the time.

Yeah, even ol' desperate, trashy me won't wear those shorts out of the house. I'd rock them like a stripper at home with my stripper shoes for my hubs, though.

Oh, good to know you're "following the rules" society has set for you.
Mine is almost to my waist. I'm just a hot mess, I guess. Oh well, hubs likes me.

Not sure where all the acrimony is coming from...
I'm 49 and the shortest I will go anymore is 5 inches. I can pull off a shorter 3.5" length if all I wanted to do is stand around or walk. That length hits me on a very flattering part on my thigh, that is, until I sit down, then all bets are off.
I do think there comes a point in one's 40s where anything shorter than 3 inches for shorts and skirts/dresses does not look age-appropriate. It matters little whether or not you have great looking pins. Just my opinion.

It comes from the jabs RCC takes at me whenever this topic comes up--it goes beyond her simply stating her opinion. Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions. Just curious, though, if you don't know I'm in my 40s, and you see me walk by in my 2" shorts, does that still count? I can't be walking around worrying how old everyone is and if they're dressed age-appropriately or whether anyone thinks I am or not. It's really no different than those with straight hair who think we with curly hair should straighten it because it's unruly or unprofessional or distracting or just ugly. Or, those who think that we over 40 should head down to the salon for the Sofia Petrillo special (from the Golden Girls).
I'll reiterate what I've said in the past: showing too much skin is not a good look at any age. The "too much" part is where we all seem to disagree. The middle part of my thighs is no different than the lower part of my thighs, IMO, and that's where my 2" shorts hit me--almost in the middle. I have trim, muscular thighs, not the big juicy thighs so many women have and I would kill to have, so that may make a bit of difference. I don't fill my shorts out the way a curvier woman does.
I'm simply encouraging the OP to do what works for her and her own personal comfort zone--that can be done without taking jabs at others. If society and its rules had their collective way, I'd be in a moo-moo and sensible shoes with my hair cut up to my ears "aging gracefully."
Of course, if one chooses to poke at the nest, expect a few wasps to fly out.

Gosh I must be blind because I do not see where RCC said anything about your shorts. But I did not read the other thread copied into this one.

My comments were generalized, and made before you entered the thread. No one said, 'HC is a big ol' skank!!!!'
But, hey, I'll let it slide. It's Saturday and maybe your coffee hasn't kicked in yet.
