abnormal mammogram and terrified
Thursday I got a call that my annual screening mammogram had some changes from the previous year, so I have to go back Tuesday for a diagnostic mammogram which could take up to 2 hours and possibly be followed by an ultrasound and a biopsy, depending on dia. mam. results. They assured me I would have an answer Tuesday, no matter how long it takes.
I am quite frightened by all of this. Statistically, 20% of abnormal mammograms are cancer, 80% turn out to be either a benign condition, or nothing at all. However, my mother had breast cancer, so that raises my percentage as well as the fact that her cancer and my "change" are on the same side of the body, the right side. I am hoping for the best but trying to prepare for the worst. My mother is a nervous wreck. My husband is supportive and compassionate and worried. Tell me your stories. I am tired of reading clinical and statistical analysis from the American Cancer Society. Don't get me wrong. I want the facts. What else should I be reading?
Your positive thoughts and prayers can't hurt either.

Though I have no experience with breast cancer, there could have been an error. I have these bump type cyst things on my legs that we went in to he checked and the dr said that they could be basil skin cancer but then I got a biopsy and I found out that it was scar tissue ( we knew that it was scar tissue in the first place but we wanted to see what it was from the dr didn't tell us so we left) anyways thAts beyond the point. Don't be scared, just cal down and relax. Everything will be ok if it is breast cancer, you will be somewhat prepared (if you could be prepared for cancer) and know what you are going into but if it is not cancer , then you will know the signs of it so you know for next time

For what it's worth, both my mother and a friend of mine recently had mammograms that showed changes, and they turned out to be benign.
You're in my thoughts.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I went through a similar experience six years ago. I did have to have the biopsy and and am happy to tell you that the cyst was benign, but that was the longest two weeks of my life.
I remember me doctor telling me two things: 80/20 are good odds to go in with, and breast cancer IS treatable in most cases.. Hang in there, and feel free to post. The people here were great support for me, too.

{{{Hugs}}} Golden, if possible, try not to read anything more. I know it's very hard because I read all the scary stuff when I had to have a brain tumor removed, but it just heightens the anxiety. Go to a movie or something to distract yourself.
I'll be thinking of you, truly, and hoping for the best. Please post back.

GC, I have been through this twice. Once about seven years ago and also a few weeks ago. In both cases, I went back for the diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound and had the results before I left. I have cysts that are benign.
Remember that the newer mammogram machines are able to see the tiniest abnormality. My mom also had breast cancer so I know how you are feeling.
Just try to relax and stay positive that the likelihood is that it's a benign cyst. You will be fine. ((hugs))

I've been through this also: twice. Fifty per cent of mammograms show changes and abnormalities, largely because the diagnostic machinery has greatly improved.
I also have a family history of breast cancer.
The doctors should get you in and out for tests asap, to ease your mind.
I hope you are fine, and I will keep you in my thoughts.

I'm sorry that you're going through this and I can understand your fear
My only word of advise I can offer is to remember that everyone reacts differently to diseases, if your tests come back as there being something (hey, don't we always say that about our hair???)
My mother was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells a few years ago, but since it was so early everything went smoothly. The good thing is that someone is taking a look at this now and hopefully anything worse can be avoided.
Hope you're well

I agree with this, though I know exactly how hard it is. I had a different type of scare myself.
I hope all turns out well, and consider many positive t's & p's done.

You're in my thoughts.
And I agree that you probably shouldn't read so much about this online.

I know how you must be feeling, I have been through it twice before, with 2 surgical biopsies as well. Both times (about 1.5-2 yrs apart) it was just microcalcifications, but benign, same breast. There is a history of cancer in my aunts and cousins. I have fibrocystic breasts and apparently grow benign calcifications too. I will probably be going in again this month, as I'm due, and I won't be surprised if they don't find some again. And I know it's better to be safe than sorry, but I hate having to cut open my breast and go through all the worry, healing, pain for nothing.
(((BIG HUGS))) and we are here for you! You'll be in my Ts&Ps.

I know its easy to say dont worry so I wont say it - I can only say last year my mother, sister, me and my best friend all had to go back for second reads after our annual exams and I was terrified. There is no breast cancer history in my family but it doesn't need to be to scare the heck out of you. All of our second reads were negative. Like another poster stated there are new machines out and they are so much more sensitive than the older machines and pick up anything. I can only tell you to try to keep your thoughts occupied and I agree maybe you shouldn't read anything else on the subject and just breathe. We are here for you!
