Happy Juneteenth!

Does your city or town do anything to commemorate this day?

No. But I mark my calendar every year.

I don't think they do anything down here, but in my old city there was a concert, parade, and festival. You'd think they'd do more in the South, but I guess not.

I know right. I'm in Alabama. They do nothing here. Then again... Maybe it's BECAUSE it's the south.

We get ready to enforce or fight yet more racist laws.

I'm pretty sure we're one of the few states for whom it's not a holiday (didn't see a list when I googled to try to find out) and that's not surprising given the racist history of so many here. Blech.

I'd love to hear about any kind of educational or interesting things other places do!

There was a Juneteenth celebration here last weeked:

The pews never miss a sermon but that doesn't get them one step closer to Heaven.

But at least the pews never attend yoga!
There's a celebration here (Franklin County, VA) at Booker T. Washington's birthplace every year.
There's an outdoor community event held at a big park here in Columbus, OH. Crafts, entertainment, ducational stuff for the kids, food, etc.

I grew up outside of Boston, went to college in Philadelphia, and then moved back to Boston. I've never heard the word "Juneteenth" in my life. What's it a celebration of?

There's a parade here in San Antonio. It was last Saturday. There's something going on today too - a rally?

Here's a link to a history of Juneteenth: http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm

Big celebration here in Austin every year. My husband covered the parade yesterday; said it was awesome.
