Bill Donahue threatens Jews
It's really significant that he warned Jews about making "making enemies of their Catholic friends," because of what he's implying. The Church persecuted Jews for centuries, so it's like saying "Watch out, or you'll see red black and white flags all over Germany." And yes, obviously he's a nut who doesn't speak for any Catholic but himself.

I captioned him on the news last week talking about the nuns who had been chastised by the Vatican. I couldn't believe how full of hate and vitriol he was. People frighten me.

He's said that if he believed abortion is okay -- and if fetuses could be tested for sexual orientation -- he'd try to have all gay fetuses aborted. WTF.

Oh, he's that guy.
For a moment I thought he was Phil Donohue's evil twin.

Waskow's editorial is very insightful and very hard to refute, hence the threats.

Thats just a ridiculous statement. And not a very Catholic thing to say. The greatest of the commandments is to "love thy neighbor". One Donahue must have forgotten about. He should hang out with Mel Gibson!

If a bunch of Jewish people suddenly start wanting to be my friend, I'll know it's cause of this guy. I've never heard of him. I wish Catholics in the media would watch saying ridiculous stuff because it Catholics lately are under a whole new level of scrutiny. (I don't mean you're scrutinizing, Eilonwy. I know you said you recognize he only speaks for himself.) IDK if it's because of the priest scandals or the evangelical movement, or both. I'm tired of having to justify my religious affiliation all the time. I don't think anyone is more upset or concerned about the priest scandals than Catholics. I don't want to get into that - just saying I feel the need to apologize in cases like this!
There is serious division within our religion, but people like Waskow just look stupid and pathetic getting smack dab in the middle of it trying to take advantage. He didn't deserve the ridiculous comment, but I don't see it as threatening if that was the most that was said: "Jews had better not make enemies of their Catholic friends since they have so few of them." I don't follow religious news as much as my mom, but she says that Jewish and Christian leaders have been lately working together in a movement to strenghten our relationship. I assumed he was referring to that and that his stirring up controversy is a step in the wrong direction. There is so much separatism within the Christian faith alone - evangelical versus mainline versus Catholic... It doesn't do anyone any good.
I'm not Jewish so I obviously can't view it from that standpoint. In recent history, Catholics have done nothing against Jews at least that I'm aware of, and priests and bishops risked their lives in WWII to protect Jews. Pope Pius XII has been recognized numerous times for his efforts during WWII. I admit I know nothing about past Catholic persecution of Jews. I'm admittedly weak in history, though I definitely want to know more about this subject now that it's been brought to my attention. I also didn't convert to Catholicism until fairly recently so Catholic history never interested me Though I have some background having gone to Catholic school for a few years, I learned more about Catholic traditions versus background of the Church. However, it doesn't make sense to me that that would be what Donahue was referring to. He should know the Catholic Church is in a very weak position, and Catholics do not have any bad blood with Jews in current times that I know of.
I read the editoral that prompted it, and it's full of the typical bigoted crap that people now so freely dump on the Catholic Church and its parishoners. It's reached an extreme level - atheist groups taking out full page ads in USA Today telling Catholics, "Isn't it time to leave the Church?" and the Obama adminisration going in trying to sap $ from the Church and dismantle it piece by piece. At no other point in time would such people have gotten away with this.
Again, the comment was wrong and whatever he meant by it. I may be wrong in my interpretation. Maybe I want to be wrong because I get defensive in instances like this. Donahue needs to be held accountable for what he has said. It ends up looking bad on all Catholics. We do need to stand up against the hate but stooping to that level does nothing but create more problems.

A comment - Donohue is the same guy who, while commenting on the Hillary Rosen flap about Ann Romney not working, said that Ann Romney was a real woman cause she had her own children; Hillary Rosen adopted hers.
A question - What is the Obama administration doing to harm the Catholic church? When was the ad taken out in the USA Today?

I can't help but feel like some things have been taken out of context. Just a thought.

I'm not going to find your information for you. This has already been discussed here; I've already outlined it in two different threads. Just do a search for "Obama adminstration" and "Catholic Church." Plus, the "War Against the Church" is pretty much common news. There are lawsuits pending...

It ran a few weeks ago, and I've read that it's been in other papers all over the country as well.

I'm not taking the bait. This is old news. Go back and read the threads. It has nothing to do with federal funds. Requiring Church employees to all have health ins which the Church has to pay for not the govt has nothing to do with federal funds. On the issue of federal funds, do you use public services? Will you receive SS? Then, by that logic, you should have the govt in your business telling you exactly what and what not you should be spending your $ on. Of course, that won't happen because it's a little easier to target a large institution than it is individuals.
Please read my past posts on the topic in which I went into more detail. It is very easy for you to locate. Not going through it again.

He's the head of the Catholic League. He's a weird, incredibly hateful man, and he's always running his mouth off on behalf of his group (which is supposed to be about Catholics' civil rights, not about dumb personal feuds with South Park).
Bill Donahue, FRIEND OF THE JEWS, on The Passion of the Christ:
