last year, a story in the NY Times caused controversy by basically stating that our individual taste in music is cemented at the age of 14. the research cited in the story was done by a neurologist at McGill University in Montreal.

one of the reasons they noted, were the number of long-term, successful musicians who turned 70 last year and in the coming year (like Paul McCartney this month) who all had similar musical influences at the same time as the birth of rock/blues.

being myself way more tied to the music from the late 60s and early 70s, i can understand this.

but there's one song for me that i remember first hearing the year i turned 14, that still takes me back to that first time i heard it.

my aunt brought a new vinyl album over to a dinner at our house that she wanted my parental units to hear. by that time, the album had already been out 2 years and one song had made a minor impression in the summer of 1972.

the lights were low and candles were flickering and my aunt put the lp on the turntable and the first beautifully haunting notes of Harry Chapin's Taxi floated out into the room.

40 years after it was recorded, i still LOVE the song.

and when i hear those opening notes, i'm taken back to that darkened room with the candles flickering with everyone in the room paying rapt attention to Chapin's storytelling ability.

I saw the Stones on SNL in 1978. I was 13. It changed my life. I stopped listening to whatever my parents were listening to (mostly country) and started listening to the rock station out of St. Louis (KSHE). I remember that like I remember putting on glasses the first time: My world suddenly was more colorful and had more life!

And yes, I'm a classic rock freak - the Stones remain my favorite band, and basically I prefer to listen to anything from the late '60s through the '80s.

At around 14 - The Jackson 5. I remember slow dancing to "I'll be there" in junior high. The boy who would always dance with me at those dances just died a couple years ago. : (

But as far as music influence, the music I most love is from my late teens in the mid 70's (metal and hard rock). Zeppelin was and is my #1 band.

i had tickets for that last ill-fated Zeppelin tour that was cancelled when Robert Plant's son died. sorry i never got to see them live.

then again, i've never seen the Stones or Springsteen either.

best shows i ever saw were put on by Queen - Freddie Mercury was the most astonishing showman. i saw them 3 times. other standouts - U2 (once), Tina Turner (once), Aerosmith (twice), Eric Clapton (twice), the Eagles (once).

I would not say my taste was cemented at 14. It has been evolving ever since. I discovered most of my favourite bands/singers in my 20's and I'm always looking for new things. And the more I broaden my knowledge of music, the less some of the things I thought were brilliant at 14 seem all the great anymore.

What I think is true is that at 14 I was headed in the right direction, and while some bands no longer seem relevant to me, perhaps they were a necessary stepping stone for me to listen to more interesting music.

I think Achy Breaky heart was out when I was 14. And I still hate it now...

A friend was actually given tickets to a Billy Ray Cyrus concert and took me because she knew no one else would go with her! We didn't especially enjoy Billy Ray, but we loved Aaron Tippin, one of his openers. Since then, I still am not big on the huge show at concerts, but love clever lyrics and an engaging personality regardless of genre. 14 was when I actually started listening to country some after years of hearing it everywhere I went. I already had spent years listening to classical on the radio (unfortunately without anyone sharing what they were playing - it was only later that I learned I enjoyed mostly Baroque type music and that I really, really love Chopin), and several years listening to 80's pop. That cheesy 80's music definitely still holds a warm place in my heart, too!

I'm pretty sure "Funky Town" was the big hit when I was 14. Loathe it.

More likely to identify today with music I heard when I was in college.

I grew up listening to my parents music. I prefer stuff from the 60's 70's. I do still love some jams form the 80's and 90's. But looking at my cd collection (yes, I still buy cd's) I have alot of the old timers or the stuff my parents played. The Beatles, the Stones, Queen, BB king, Zepplin, Hendrix, the Doors, Pink Floyd, Billie Holiday, Aerosmith, Johnny Cash just to name a few. There are some "newer" folks I love too, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Outkast, Alanis Morissete. There is really no songs that really stick out in my mind at 14. But i remember Free fallin by tom petty and the heartbreakers and Bohiemian Rhapsody by Queen being among my favorites as a kid.

I've alway gotten lost in music, and love so many different genres, it's not even funny. Fortunately, between my older brothers and parents I was exposed to everything from Prince, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, Zeppelin, Doors, Sam Cook, Frank Zappa, Tom Petty, Otis (who my dad had the fortune of seeing in a barn, in SC, before he shipped out to Vietnam), The Stones, David Bowie, The B-52's, Gladys, Jackson 5, I could go on and on... by age 4. My dad was also a bluegrass musician so I exposed to that, but it never fully took. I had my own high school, product of the 90's, faves. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, etc... Looking back at age 14, I listened to radio often so I heard a great deal of pop. I was also insane about NKOTB. Many songs were fun to dance to, but I do remember Fast Car by Tracy Chapman and Wishing Well by Terence Trent D'arby giving me chills. I still love both those songs.
