Default How do I tell people that I'm vegetarian now?

I'm a new vegetarian and I'm afraid that people will make fun of me when they find out.

"I'm a vegetarian now."

Stand strong in your beliefs. If they make fun of you; they make fun of you. If you strongly believe in being a vegetarian then it won't matter.

Just say you're a vegetarian. Only really meat-obsessed people will care, and eh, let them make fun of you. It's of no real consequence to you.

Most people won't make fun of you. Only immature people will.

You'll only get made fun of if you turn into a crazy, militant version of a vegetarian. Otherwise, most won't care.

I wouldn't announce it or anything. Just turn down any offers of meat. If people ask why (which they likely won't unless it's a dinner party any you're not eating anything, for example). When people ask, just casually say "oh, I decided to stop eating meat for a while" and if you want, then give a casual reason like "I just feel much better" or "I just couldn't reconcile it with my beliefs" and say "I don't miss it at all" and change the topic.

When I decided to go vegetarian, it wasn't that big of a deal for my family. I had already not eaten red meat in years and then slowly stopped eating chicken, I was always turning down meat or when we went out I just always got non meat dishes. Not once have I been made fun of and its been about 7 years now. I even make meatless meals for my kids once a week and they enjoy trying my foods.

If you don't sit their and tell your meat eating friends and family that what they eat is gross or draw attention to your own eating habits you really wont have to much trouble with others making fun of you.

Ahh, I'm guilty of this. One of my friends has turned into a militant vegan semi-raw foodist and spans FB with pictures of dead animals and how killing animals is equal to the murder of humans and it's like... Now I just find him irritating.

Yea, as long as you're not obnoxious or pushy or preachy I'm sure most people won't care or challenge you.

I've been a vegetarian for 17 years and the only time anyone gives me any grief about it is when I visit family back in the Midwest. Most people are cool with it so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Congratulations by the way.

Just tell them.

I'm not a vegetarian but I dont eat pork or beef. I do get grief from people. I even have family members give me something I dont eat and tell me its chicken (i do eat chicken). Its disrepectful! I know avoid going to these relatives homes to eat. I once had a co worker put a piece of pork on my plate at lunch. That was the last time I went to lunch with them.

Most people I have encountered are mature and supportive. They are my true friends and family. These are the people are associate with the most. They know they can eat anything they want, just as I can. None of us are rude or disrespectful of each others choices. if they are I cut them from my life.

I invited a friend over for dinner and she responded with "I'm a vegan... can I make a dish to share with everyone so you don't have to try to figure it out?" I actually love trying to fit meals I cook into dietary restrictions whether related to health, taste preferences or lifestyle choices in type of meal, so I enjoyed making a vegan meal for everyone - but I thought her response was perfect.

If going out to eat "I'm trying to stick to a vegetarian diet now, can we make sure we choose somewhere with options?"

There will be people who make fun of it, especially depending where you are - but if they do it's really not worth letting yourself care about their opinions if you can control your emotions that well. I would probably go vegetarian for my health and simply the fact I'm not particularly enjoying meat these days if it weren't for my mom's diabetes. Meat is just the easiest protein for her.
