I really, REALLY do not like chimps. Bonobos, yes; chimps, no. Even in the wild they'll actually make a hunting party and go kill neighboring chips. And they always go for the same place on the body-- hands, genitals, face.
I don't like them.

Do you suspect he lost his genitals, too, and the hospital/media just isn't saying?

Are chimps apes?
He totally shouldn't have gone into the no-go zone. Sad...

Yeah, chimps, gorillas, orangutans, gibbons (and sometimes bonobos) are considered "apes."
I get made at these wild animals for being so damn vicious...but get mad at the humans, too, for being so foolish. Sad, for real.

I guess I don't understand why this is titled Ape Attack. It's more human stupidity (I want to call it ignorance but I believe this man knew better). These chimps all come from a past where they were abused by people. They are living in a sanctuary. He placed himself physically in a location he shouldn't have been and then reached for an item that was in their "safe place". It's very sad. It doesn't lessen that what happened to him is awful

I think that something like this happens (1) because, as with nearly any job we have, we get complacent and lazy and (2) people tend to anthropomorphise animals-- Chips look human, their DNA is nearly identical to ours therefore they have human thoughts and wouldn't hurt the person caring for them.
Well, this just isn't true. But I"m not going to blame the victim on this. Apparently he wanted to move a rock so that one of the chimps wouldn't use it as a weapon against humans. I hope he recovers.

i wonder why they attacked him though...like was it because he took their rock or because he entered their space? did he remind them of a former abuser? is it some sort of dominant behavioral thing?

thanks for the article!
then again, we as humans kill things that come into our space all the time. if a bug or rodent walks into our house it's dead. i'm sure they ask themselves the same question, "what did we do to deserve that?"

I do agree, actually! (although I usually put them out rather than kill them,, truthfully. Unless it's a centipede)

~A physical anthropologist appears~
You know, I feel like humans tend to feel or think that other animals do not kill for sport. That we're the only animals that kill our own kind... NOT. Chimps do kill other chimps and sometimes for no reason but to dominate. When chimps are in groupings, they tend to attack the the lone wolf. It's what they do and they have always done it.
This is why I am so AGAINST people have primates as pets (I know this isn't the case). They can be so unpredictable at times and at the end of the day, it's an animal. The man should have been behind some glass or something.
Maybe the chimps felt like their territory was being invaded? They tend to attack and kill under those circumstances. Who knows, it's not like we can sit down and have some tea with the chimps that attacked him.
[edit] Ahhh, I read the article. He DID invade their territory. That is a big no-no. Chimps kill for territorial purposes. They probably felt threatened that he was invading their "kingdom".

Tail = monkey
No tail = ape
(Probably with a couple of exceptions)
Please get your Pokemon terminology right. "A wild physical anthropologist appears"
