The Pedophile Next Door *Update, Post #8
Last Tuesday, I woke up to a police raid at the house next door. Authorities from 2 local jurisdictions as well as State and Federal, conducted a Federal Search Warrant at the property. There must have been 30 to 40 people involved in the search. I spoke to one of the County Sheriffs who was on scene and he told me that they had extensive evidence implicating the adult male at the residence for receipt and possession of child pornography. Ugh! I am so freaking disgusted and angry.
Our cul-de-sac has 7 houses on it containing 16 children, ages 3 - 17. Needless to say, the neighbors are frantic. I don't worry so much about my kids, 17 and 15, but my heart breaks for the anguish of the parents of the younger ones, particularly the one family with daughters, ages 3 and 5. This sick creep seems quite drawn to them.
Three computers, cameras, and boxes of stuff were removed from the residence. The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody. The shocking part is he was released on bond that same day. WTF??? (sorry...can we still say that here?)
Some background on the guy, it's obvious to all the neighbors that the suspect has some type of mental deficiency. His sister tells everyone he was in a car accident as a teenager and his mental development now is more like a child, hence his interest in children. He does like to be in the court when the children are riding their bikes, scooters, etc. Parents are always out there supervising, but in the last year or so, he has become increasingly focused on the two young girls especially and wants to be near the kids at all times. He got shooed away from the bus stop on the corner by one of the dads who felt it was inappropriate for a 55 year-old man to be hanging out there every morning. Nobody disagreed!
Since his arrest, the neighbors gathered over at our house on Friday night to discuss the situation and to come up with a plan on how to go forward with this guy, since he's still amongst us. We all are in agreement to be vigilant, have cell phones on our persons at all times in case we need them to take pics and/or video or call the sheriff if he violates his 'No Contact With Children' order. His next hearing is on Thursday and myself and a few other parents plan on attending. We want to be there to hear for ourselves what the charges are and what will happen next. The suspect's sister, who is the caretaker of both him and their elderly mother, has not been forthcoming at all as to his true condition and we believe to his predilections. As the neighbors began talking it became immediately clear that the suspect had admitted to one neighbor that he is schizophrenic and that his sister lies to everyone about him being in a car accident. He also admitted that he has violent outbursts and has hit both his sister and his mom in the past. Another neighbor became concerned when he was observed taking pictures of the children. What also became painfully clear was that neighbors were not necessarily talking to one another - big mistake.
If you've made it this far, bless your heart. My head is still spinning from all that has unfolded. Venting is good. I also hope that someone who has gone through something similar will chime in. Anyone in law enforcement or the court system would also be welcome. As neighbors, we all would like to know what our rights are. This impacts not only the neighbors in close proximity, but the entire neighborhood. Who wants to live in a neighborhood with a pedophile?

Wow that is scary. Was this his first arrest? He's not on any watchdog sites or anything that anyone would have known?
How did anyone find out ?

I don't have any experience with this SC, but I'm sorry you're having to deal with such a disturbing situation.

After his arrest, I did log on to our State Police Sex Offender Registry and did not see him listed. I also registered for their notification service that alerts the community whenever any new offenders become registered. It is kind of freaky to find out just how many sex offenders are registered in my small town.
I don't know whether or not he has a record. I can only assume he doesn't because of how quickly he was released on bond.

Thanks, ninja. I haven't really slept very good since last week. I'm on edge and I'm just so angry. I think all of us have been in shock since this happened, but my shock is now turning to anger. My torch and pitchfork are at the ready.

People's arrests, convictions and jail time resonds are all public information. In many counties, it's available online. In some of the smaller, poorer conties, you have to go to the courthouse to request it. Many states' DRC websites will let you search the records of people who served time in the penitentiaries.
If you are just venting, you may not want to go to the trouble of searching for this (tho, if it's online, it would take only a few minutes). But if you are really trying to take some kind of action, then find out what his arrest record looks like.
Maybe you can speak to the prosecutor and ask to testify against him during the trial or speak at his sentencing.
As a parent, I would find out what the law allows, and if it's permitted, I'd canvass the area, knocking on doors and giving all the residents flyers w/ his picture and a description of his crimes.
Yes, a few houses ago, I lived around the corner from someone who was a registered sex offender...but by the time I discovered it, I was in the process of selling the house and moving. And my daughter was only an infant.
I don't see why it matters if he was in a car accident or has schizophrenia or whatever. He has a problem which causes him to be a threat to children (and maybe other people besides children). I would do whatever I could to educate whoever would listen.
Personally, I don't feel we go far enough to protect the public from repeat sexual predators. I think they need to be stigmatized more...esp if they don't agree to chemical castration or something similar. I tend to get a little stone aged on this subject and wish they would just a set up a colony for them and drop them all off there and bye.

That is so scary omg!
I also don't have any good advice, but I do think it's good you and your neighbors are communicating about it now.

Quick update:
The hearing on July 5th was very short because a continuance was granted. Not sure which side asked for it, but the new hearing date is in late August.

I don't know, SC. I'm feeling very low about justice right now.
I really hope this works out well for you.

It's fantastic that you were/are planning on going. I think a show from the neighborhood is great choice. It will also help to hear the facts, in court. He may very well have been in an accident, like his sister said, and he may have a different view of the situation, or...
We actually have a man in our county who went through this. He and his sister were hit by a drunk driver, years ago. His sister died in the accident and he was left with brain damage. He becomes a different person "Bimbo" when he goes off medication, and he becomes violent and abusive toward women. And family. When on meds he has the mental frame of a sweet 10 year old boy. He would call my office and sing Christmas carols. So wild.
Regardless, I hope your show of support helps ease them out of the neighborhood, to be perfectly honest. Mental condition or not, that is frightening. If nothing else they need to consider putting him in an environment where he is not a potential threat to children.

I just came across this thread. How scary for the parents! Esp the ones with young children.
I'm not defending the sex offenders because they're just sick but the registry includes things like 18yo's who have been prosecuted for getting with 16yo's as well. It's overkill unless they actually list the person's offense but it is good to know they're in the area regardless.

That is a great point, banjo. This bothers me, and bothers every law enforcement officer I know. Something needs to be done to separate the offenses. So many people are on the registry for consensual sex, with a very small age difference. In my work experience, 75% of the time, parents are upset because a boy has taken their daughter virginity and they prosecute. Either that or they break up and the girl see's red. It honestly happens all the time and either way the boy is deemed a sex offender for the rest of his life.
It's no where near the same thing.

Don't forget you can get on the registry for peeing in public.
A friend's relative is on the list for indecent exposure. he had to go, there was no where to go, so he went in some bushes. A cop drove up and busted him.

You can read what the exact crimes they were convicted of are...but even still, it can be hard to extrapolate exactly what they did from what they were convicted of.

Exactly, it can be hard and often people do not look further than "OMG! Somebody on the registry lives next door". Obviously SC knows enough basics about this situation, but that is helpful for other worried parents looking at the list.

I don't see the above few posts as being an issue. Watchdog websites and registers list what level offender they are. Most parents, if they're looking it up at all, are going to want to know what the offender looks like, and what his offense was.

SC, I'm angry for you!
We have one man who lives down the street who keeps being released, violating parole, getting arrested, released again. This man has at least 6 counts of sexual.assault on children. I don't know why he keeps going free.
We also have a delivery guy from a Chinese restaurant who is a high level registered sex offender.
We have a lot of kids in the area. I just wouldnt let my kids play outside unsupervised. I watch them all the time. Its just not safe. Too many crazy people out there.

The fact that young love or lust, with a minuscule age difference, resulting in consensual sex can lead to sex offender being on your permanent record is a real big issue. Or other offenses that are not in the same league.
And you might be surprised by what people will or will not do. I have to officially state that people should not walk through flames, while exiting, if they are in a burning building. Some people already know the name and what the person looks like, some hear info third party, some freak out. A little extra information on the subject of offenders doesn't hurt.
** And I would ask someone why the guy with 6 counts keeps getting released. That is ridiculous. After so many probation and parole violations alone he should be forced to serve jail time.
Though I do believe they just changed some of the rules. I'll ask the probation worker I know who deals with offenders. It seems like she said they made some horrible changes based on over crowding in jails, during a conversation a few months ago.

I believe he has served some minimal sentences, but I don't know for sure. His most recent counts were just 4 years ago. I believe a couple of them were considered statutory rape, but the girl was pretty young.
My neighbor works for the corrections department and apparently they tried to keep him there, but the warden fought to keep him out BC he was 'too dangerous'
Really, it makes no sense to me. But like I said, I make sure my kids are always in sight.
