Spanx... I'm scared

Like Tree2Likes

Keeping in mind that I am very weird... I bought a monster skirt. It looks like this:

Stretchy Olive Monster Skirt by mymonsterhat on Etsy

I already have a monster hat. Actually, it's a pug hat that I asked the designer to make me instead of a monster hat.

anyway, I think I expected the material to be kind of spandexy and even though it'd be tight it'd be enough to suck in some of my looser parts. No go. The skirt is like a t-shirt and every loose bit of me shows. I love my monster skirt but I'm scared about wearing Spanx.

Do you wear them? Do they make you feel claustrophobic? Do they make you feel FATTER? Do they really work? Also, do they give you a muffin top? And does it HAVE to be Spanx or do other sucker-inner type things work just as well?

I recently started wearing Spanx because chub rub is killer for me. I actually love them. I feel very comfortable in them and I don't feel like I am being squeezed. I get the ones that are the least slimming. They feel like tights. They do smooth things out, my butt doesn't jiggle.
3b | low-normal porosity (still confused, definitely not high porosity) | med to coarse texture

Co-Wash: most any silicone free V05 or Suave | RO: GVP Cond. Balm, GVP Joico K Pak, Tresemme Naturals Moisutrizing Cond., SheaMoisture Shea Butter Restorative Cond. | LI: one of my rinse outs | DT: one of my rinse outs with oil | Stylers: BRHG
Spanx is just a trendy brand.

Just go to a department store's lingerie section and try stuff on until you find something you like. It will be as comfortable or uncomfortable as you choose.
I will put a plug in for Assets. Same company as spanx but made for Target. They do not feel uncomfortable to me and they are cheaper than Spanx but still not real cheap-$20 range. They definitely smooth everything out.

I get the spanx that smooth everything out, not the slimming on..but it does slim a little. Definitely worth it for me. One of mine is loose than the other(dont know how since they are the exact same size) and the looser one doesnt give me muffin top and is comfy. The tighter one is okay when my stomach is not so big but it can be uncomfortable. I think it's important to get the right size or possibly a size up for comfort.
I have a full bodied suit with removable straps to wear with certain dresses. I feel/look super sexy when all you see is smooth lines. but if its just a skirt or my lower half I just put on some control top pantyhose.

Undergarments are half your outfit. they're a good building block.

started CG on 6/25/12.
  • 2c with a strait underneath
  • normal elasticity on top, none on the underneath
  • Fine side of Normal
  • Thick hair
  • Poriosity is a mystery. I think its all over the place.
I love that skirt.

And how do you know your size? Also, are they a total witch to put on? Is it like trying to put on a scuba suit? (I've never actually put on a scuba suit, it just looks frustrating)

They're really stretchy and not difficult to get in. Peeing in the ones with legs can be tricky though. lol. and the one I have I picked up at a department store. Its bra sized and I tried it on before i purchased it.

The ones I have are just short types ones not a full body one so peeing is no issue. They do fit snug so putting them on is like putting on pantyhose for me.

I think it may depend on your body type. My experience - and my experience only - is that a lot of those type of undergarment are designed to create the illusion of an hourglass type shape - i.e. suck in waist and/or hips to make things proportional. I have tried Spanx, tried Assets, tried all kinds of department store brands, and what I find with all of them is that because I naturally have an hourglass shape at any size, and naturally have a big differential between waist and hips, even if I am bigger and dissatisfied with the look of my body, they suck me in so that I'm still proportional but the flaws I want to hide are still there - I don't know if this makes sense? I think if only your stomach, or only your thighs or butt, are your so-called "problem area", these things may work better to minimize that, but that's just a guess.

eta: I think they're also useful for general smoothing of lines, and the smaller I am, the happier I am with the results.

I personally don't care for them. I feel like they smooth my butt too much and nothing else enough. My butt is the one part I don't want to flatten out!

I wear them when I work out bc my butt jiggles if I don't.

They keep you from jiggling and pull your looser, flabbier areas in a little tighter but they are not going to significantly change your shape or make you look like a much smaller person.

I second the Assets suggestion. Not as hardcore as Spanx and cheaper.
