Default Chick-fil-A President Slams Gay Marriage

Chick-fil-A president slams gay marriage | The Lookout - Yahoo! News

The president of Chick-fil-A, the fast food chain with more than 1,600 restaurants and $4 billion in revenue, has come out against same-sex marriage.

"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,'" Dan Cathy, the company's president and chief operating officer, said in a recent radio interview. "I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about."

In an interview with the Baptist Press published this week, Cathy doubled down on his stance against same-sex unions.

"Guilty as charged," Cathy said. "We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

"We know that it might not be popular with everyone," he added, "but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles."

The company, founded by Dan's father, Truett Cathy, in 1946, has a history of "unapologetic social conservatism," as the Daily Caller put it. All 1,608 of its stores are closed on Sundays, a day of rest for most Christians.

According to Queerty.com, the WinShape Foundation—Chick-fil-A's charitable arm—donated more than $1.1 million between 2003 and 2008 to anti-LGBT groups, doubling that amount to $2 million in 2009.

Earlier this year, students at Northeastern University protested a proposal to put a Chick-fil-A on its Boston campus because of the company's history of supporting anti-gay organizations. The school abandoned its plan.

They haven't gotten a dime from me for a couple of years, now. Doubt they ever will.

I don't eat fastfood at all and I've never even been inside a Chick fil-A before...but I did think this was weird for him to state this now. Like for what ? I mean okay..so what that's his opinion but what is he broadcasting it for ?

And giving all that money to anti-gay groups...like what's that supposed to do ?

I've only eaten there because I was forced to, on school trips, and I'm now very proud of that fact.

*And I'll read the articles more thoroughly when I have a chance. I'm interested in all that he said, and the campus story. Every time I start reading the phone rings at work.

I've never liked Chick-fil-A but that's besides the point. Even if I liked their food I wouldn't eat there...if we had them in this state.

They've always been pretty open about their views. That's fine. They're allowed to have them.

I also don't have to eat there.

I don't even know what that place is. We must not have one.

Yup. And, huh, turns out there's one like a few miles from me. Never knew that. Well, now I can be doubly sure not to go there.

I don't mind their food and my kid loves their chicken, but I just can't deal. They are obviously free to support whatever they want, I don't have to support them.

It's actually been a good little opening for discussing this with my daughter. When a six year old is appalled by your actions, you need to check yourself.

Eh, no thank you. We have few in my area, that I know of. None in my town. There is one (or 2) in the closest city. I've never seen a billboard like that there. The city is referred to as Little San Francisco. That would go over like a lead balloon.

Why can't he support gay marriage?

Now I can't support their delicious chicken. Ughhhh.

That's okay I'm limiting fast food anyway. Now I can resist more.

The first couple of time I read that poster I thought it was a smear campaign.

Lol, my same words when I stopped eating there a year ago after hearing about that bullish. I will never understand why people care soooo much about who people fall in love with.

Those damn cows are the debbil.

I would fall out if I saw that. Yes, I'm from the land of the southern baptist but I have never even seen or heard of a protest during a small pride parade here. Things have gotten heated in individual families and debates were heated during (the sham that was) amendment one but advertisements like that would not be tolerated or appreciated. I honestly don't think it would be even by the majority who may agree with it.

Every single time I pop my head in this thread it goes crazy at work. Will I ever learn?

I knew this for a long time. I'm not sure why he has issue with gay marriage.

I do know chick-fil-A is a "christian" company, so maybe as the president he feels the need to be against gay-marriage.

Either way, I think their chicken is way too salty. i have eaten there before finding out about how they felt about equal marriage, and always felt so welcomed. Not many fastfood places where the managers walk around and talk to you and see if you need anything. It was the first fast food place i have been too where even if its busy you dont hear people freaking out in the back. i had respect for the compnay so would get a peach milkshake every once in a while. Then I found out a while ago that they the company is against equal marriage rights, and have giving money to anti-equal marriage campaigns. I no longer go there. they have lost my respect.

I'm a Christian, believe Biblical (Godly, or true marriage in Biblical sense) marriage is between a man and woman, and still support legal marriage between same sex couples, since I think everyone paying taxes should have the same rights as other taxpayers. There are financial and legal benefits to marriage under the law, so lawmakers should provide equal rights for citizens (or non-citizen taxpayers) despite personal religious beliefs about a particular issue.

That written, I love that Chick-fil-A is a Christian company and stands for its religious values despite their beliefs being unpopular. I will most certainly continue to support them, and pray they'll put their money into teaching more of us Christians how to live Godly lives with humility and conviction that positively influence non-believers to come to Christ (Biblical concept) rather than paying to force religious beliefs and practices on non-believers (non-Biblical concept, especially following Jesus).

There is only one of these stores located in my city that I know of, on the campus of New York University. I think some of the students tried to get it shut down over the issue, but it's still there as far as I know. I've never had any desire to go there before and no desire now.

I wasn't aware of much about them besides people say they have good chicken sandwhiches..LOL! I had no idea this was well known about the company.

I feel like they are entitled to their opinions and afterall..it is their company. I just didn't comprehend the sudden broadcasting of his feelings about same sex marriage as long as the company has been around..but now I know that this is not "sudden". I wasn't aware.

Yup, plus they're also not very woman-friendly either.

Yep, they're also closed on Sundays. I eat there sometimes, I know I shouldn't but it's so damn good, especially for fast food. So does my gay friend, same reasoning as mine and he's pretty good at boycotting. They're all over in the south and good customer service and quality for a fast food place which many consider it a step up from a typical fast food.
