Nynaeve's friend wrote a great review on goodreads.

I get frustrated when people say things like 'its shocking to me that racism is still in the world'. Whats shocking about it? Are you really just noticing that racism exists in our society!? Did you actually need someone to point it out to you at the age of ___ to recognize it?

I was pretty ticked by the bit about African-American readers when I saw that article last week. She needs to DIAF.

I don't get why white people feel the need to defend their racist stuff after POC say it's racist. I totes forgot you were the final authority on racism.

If you keep having to prove how you aren't racist, you're probably racist. Or just really stupid.

I read two chapters and I was offended. I don't particularly enjoy having some white woman think the only way she can make racism relatable is to make the victim white--because readers can't identify with POC characters, apparently.

I also don't enjoy having the black characters still 2 dimensional and villainous. Making all the black characters 'voluptuous'? That's realistic.

"Get your hands off me you d*mn Coal" smacks of "Get your hands off me you d*mn, dirty ape." *side eye*

Also, I was in the grocery store today. I saw plenty of beauty products to give your skin a pearly glow/pearlescent/whatever. I didn't see any to make my skin dusty like a coal. Boo.

She's said in her defense of the names that 'coal' isn't a slur. And yet its used as a racial slur in the book.

Whether she is knowingly racist or not, the woman is an idiot. Its like every time she opens her mouth (online) she digs a deeper hole for herself!
I think that's deliberate. There have been quite a few YA authors who lose their minds online to create controversy and get more attention (i.e. sales) for their books. Her racists remarks seem designed for just that purpose.

^ sadly, that is true, particularly self published authors. I've seen a lot of blow ups recently, one of the worst ones being a blog created to reveal the identities of goodreads reviewers who this person doesn't like.

They hunted down their real names, phone numbers, addresses, jobs, family names, made comments on whether their person lives, their parenting etc. One reviewer received a threatening phone call. It was disgusting and scary. It followed a lot of trolling and several upsets on goodreads from a select few self published authors ( I believe) and a lot of people strongly suspect a s-pub author behind it.
That is scary...
