Default Amerikah owns Mars, when have your faves?

Since Amerikah now owns Mars, I fully expect a giant carving of George Washington's face eating a hamburger while holding a weeping bald eagle on it.

LOL!

I thought they had landed on Mars before? Is this the first rover ever to land on Mars?

This rover is more advanced than the other ones (nuclear powered and can run for 2 yrs). The previous ones were only able to take photos.

This rover is about the size of a car and is basically, a walking lab. It landed in a crater that is thought to be an ancient lake (where there used to be water, perhaps). They can now search for or see if there was previous life on Mars.

So it's a big deal! This hasn't been done before!

I see! Good to know. Go Space Program!

So it's looking for signs of life on Mars right? It's hotter than the hottest part of hell on Mars. Good luck to the rover!

I bought Mars was cold? Or at least colder than earth but not freezing except on the poles.

Hmm I need to investigate.

Yup! They had a live-feed so that you could watch it land a few hours ago. NASA was having a geek-party in there.

They're all super excited LOL!

Here's a pic of it on Mars yesterday

Mars is cold (can get down to the -200ish) because of its distance from the sun. Mercury is the hot one.

I fully expect the rover to transmit footage of a Transformer sometime soon.

We watched last night and that was pretty darn neat to see and exhilarating to watch everyone's reaction in the control room.

Mr. Spring said this in response to a post on FB from his Mom about it:

Quote:
When they confirmed touchdown I was watching the feed from the control room and I observed: Those people are so damn smart they can land a rover on a planet thousands of miles away with pinpoint accuracy, but they still have a less than 50% success rate when it comes to connecting squarely on high-fives.

Thank you for posting those .gifs, sleepymeko! It makes me smile to see how thrilled they are.

The search for evidence of past life begins! My brother and I agree that this would've been the perfect time for a mysterious shadow to move across the rover's plane of vision and then for the feed to suddenly cut out, lol, but I like their giddy celebration way better than incredulous panic. Also, discovery beats drama, so come on rover, let's have some!

Mars has major temp extremes. Very very very cold and very very very hot.
