Default sequence of kitchen remodel tasks - advice needed

I have medium oak laminate kitchen cabinets. I want white cabinets. I can't afford new cabinets, wood or laminate. I also want new countertops. It's going to be a multi-year project. I don't want to finance it so I can only do it after summer school teaching. It takes me forever to make a decision so I have to start planning and budgeting now for next summer. So my questions...

Anyone had success with painting laminate cabinets? I've read that it can be done, but I'd love to hear from someone who has done it.

Which should I do first, the cabinets or the countertops?

Regarding countertops, granite is not an option due to the cost and neighborhood (medium income, vinyl siding, snout garage, cookie cutter subdivision). What else is can be considered?

Other thinkgs I need to consider?

Myra - Sherry and John Petersik at the Young House Love blog repainted their kitchen cabinets and they look FANTASTIC!

in fact, their entire kitchen remodel is mostly DIY and it's amazing - or "amaze-balls" as they like to say!

I knew you'd have an answer Rou! I started to send a PM but couldn't figure out how (note I was really spacy and posted this thread twice). Anyway, thanks. I know that blog so I'll check it out.

Didn't you say you have laminate cabinets? If so, the link Rou posted isn't going to work. The cabinets in that link are wood. You will need special paint that's suitable for laminate. I haven't done it but I did a lot of research a couple of years ago because our old cabinet doors were laminate. Here is the paint you would use.

I know you say you can't afford new cabinets but what about new doors? That's what I ended up doing instead of painting and I couldn't be happier. My cabinet doors are odd sizes so they were made to fit. That made them a little more expensive but if your house isn't very old, I'm sure you can get doors off the shelf for not very much. Ikea, Home Depot, Lowes, etc have them. My custom doors were under $800.

I refreshed our kitchen myself when I was unemployed. The only thing I didn't do was install the countertops.

Here is the kitchen before:

Here it is after:

We're getting new flooring this year. We had to put that off, due to a new dog that wasn't potty trained.

Regarding the countertops, the non-laminate options are all in the same price range as granite. I suppose one cheaper option is do-it-yourself tile but tile counters are hard to keep clean because of the grout.

If you end up painting the cabinets, I would:
1. Remove the doors and paint
2. Paint the boxes and trim
3. Install counters
4. Hang the doors again

there are paints formulated for laminate surfaces, but the best thing to do with laminate is sand it, use a high-adhesion primer and *then* paint.

Zinsser Bin is the primer that i see mentioned most often.

Rustoleum also has a new product line they call Cabinet Transformations specifically designed for painting laminate kitchen cabinets.

I did this in my rental property. I sanded the laminate cabinets, primed and painted. They turned out great. Totally possible, totally easy and totally affordable. Good luck!

Anymore, granite is the same price (or cheaper!) Than any of the solid surface counter materials. If you look at more common granite slabs, instead of fancy/exotic granites, it can be downright cheap. I just did my counters in granite for only $2,000. I have a lot of counters...70 sq ft...most kitchens are half that. Go shopping and see how affordable granite has become.

It doesnt matter if you paint cabinets or replace counters first. Just make sure your cabinets are stable and worth saving before you put new counters on them.

I would suggest splurging for granite (bc yes people looking buy homes in working class and middle income neighborhoods are familiar w/ granite, too and want it).

Paint the cabinets first so you don't get spatters and striking on the granite.

But personally, I would buy new doors/fronts for my cabinets before I would try to paint them.
