Your children and clean hands
Yesterday I was with my friend and her five year old at the park. After the girl had been running around playing for a while she came over to us and asked for M&Ms. My friend took out a wet napkin and had the girl wash her hands with it. Then squirted her hands with hand sanitizer, then gave her the M&Ms.
It's been a long time since my daughter was 5, but I"m pretty sure I would have just dumped them in her hand. Not saying my friend was wrong, that's just how I would have done it. Washing hands before dinner, sure.
How important it is to you that your kids hands are clean before you give them a snack?

Not too important, I guess. I would have just dumped them in her hands.

I get on them about washing their hands after using the bathroom. And I want them to wash their hands after eating bc don't want grease, spaghetti sauce, A-1, peanut butter, etc all over my furniture and clothes. But I'm not obsessive about handwashing. I don't think I ever brought hand sanitizer or wipes to the park!

I go both ways...just depends on if we've just been sick. LOL!
I tend to be more careful with indoor playgrounds.....not sure why.

I am the same as your friend. I even have signs up in my bathroom at home just for people who visit who may not normally wash their hands. Yep I am germaphobic. :-)

Why do kids always want to cuddle after they eat a PB&J or a piece of bacon? Every morning, before work, I'm dipping and dodging a greasy bacon hand...

I don't really care about hand washing. I think it's important to clean your hands throughout the day, but I only really stress after the bathroom or when coming in the house from playing outside.

I am not hyper vigilant about cleanliness. I sometimes don't even remember to have them wash before eating. I hate all this neuroses about kids being super clean. If they aren't exposed to some germs then how will they build any immunity?

Sure seems like my friend's kids are sick a lot more than other five year olds I know.

I'm sure there are kids who are more succeptible to germs than others. From my experience with my own kids, they get sick a normal amount and there are some viruses and whatnot that cannot be avoided no matter how much you wash your hands, which is why I reserve hand washing for after play, bathroom, etc.
School started Monday so I'm expecting the colds to start in a week or so

Just one of those given laws of kids for some reason...my daughter decided to use my dress as a napkin the other day after she finished her chicken nuggets...

Regular exposure to dirt and germs is good for kids' immune systems. It's good for all of us really. I'm all for basic cleanliness and handwashing, but I don't go crazy about it.
Studies have shown that the kids'/adults who use the most hand sanitizers and bleach cleaning agents in their homes, have higher levels of illness.

I was just thinking about something similar, as a matter of fact. That stupid Maroon 5 song got me thinking about how there's no such thing as pay phones anymore. That led to how, in retrospect, they must have been crawling with the most disgusting germs ever and we never thought about it. And what about all the other things we used to touch and play with that were probably filthy?
Honestly, I think hand sanitizer is the debbil, unless there's absolutely no other solution and you know your hands are disgusting. They don't kill all germs, so the strongest ones are still left behind to multiply. That's what causes illness.
BTW, after barely washing my hand when I was a kid, I'm hardly ever sick as an adult.

They wash their hands when we come home if we've been at the store, after school, after the park, pretty much anywhere if they haven't been washed since we left home.
They wash hands after using the bathroom, especially if they are in a public bathroom.
I keep wipes in the car and I have them wipe their hands down after we've gone somewhere where they may have touched a lot of things.
I sanitize at times too.

Confession: The complete truth is I really am just not great about their handwashing. If I see actual dirt on their hands they most definitely wash. Other than that, well like my husband says, its just a crapshoot.
We do try to wash after public restrooms, but sometimes they are just really gross and I don't care.

Do the kids have any medical reason to need extreme cleanliness?
I'm pretty laxidaisical when it comes to germs and such. I would just dump.

Nah, that's just her way. As soon as they come out of the mall she pours hand sanitzer in all their hands.
The only time I do anything remotely like this is if there's Noro going around.

LACKADAISICAL!! LET US USE IT OFTEN!
Back to topic, hmmm, not how I would do it and I would definitely raise an eyebrow .... but quietly, so as not to offend. That gets the nej stamp of WTF. STAMPED!

I don't stress about it. I make them wash hands after using the bathroom or if they're visibly dirty. They're both super healthy kids, so I guess it works for them.
