Lightbulb metabolic type eating *update*

i was watching dr. oz last week and he had an episode on eating according to your metabolic type. he asked the ladies (3 sisters) their preferences and a few questions to determine their type. he labeled them as type a, b, and c but it made me remember this book i'd bought some time ago which basically is the same concept. apparently according to dr. oz quiz i'm a type b which also corresponds to a carbohydrate efficient type in the book i linked. only about 23-25% of the population is that way so many people believe that they aren't this way and that more protein (think atkins) is better. for this type the breakdown of the ideal carbs, protein and fats are:

60-70% carbs => higher is better
20-25% protein => lower is better
10-15% fats => lower is better

this was really interesting to me. i thought i was sort of been eating this way now that i only eat seafood and don't eat other meats. according to this concept, an atkins like diet might make me lose weight but i wouldn't feel good and eventually some of my health markers would be off. i know can't do a lot of cheese, dairy, etc or i feel it with digestive distress. i was still curious about why my weight hasn't budged but i think i may need to eat more "good carbs" and reduce my fats to get into those ranges. i looked at a few days from myfitnesspal because i never cared about my split and i was eating fewer carbs than i thought i was and more protein and fat. the one twist, is that i probably still want to limit my wheat in the carbs. i chatted with a girl on mfp that is a carb type and she said she lost weight easily eating that way but she had to watch the wheat/gluten. i ordered metabolic typing diet so i could understand the concept a little more and from the sample pages it looks like they have more "test" questions to help you assess where you are.

anyway, i'm excited to try this new way of eating to see if it helps my weight budge and some of my cravings decrease. oh, fruit, it's encouraged with my type whereas many diets discourage or limit fruit consumption and i always struggled with that. i love fresh watery fruits like watermelon and pineapple. dr. oz explained that eating according to your right type will help you feel optimally and the one lady was type b and addicted to caffeine, i feel like i "need" it too. plus i know healthy carb consumption is linked to mood too and i'm always trying to make sure i stay in my happy place.

so just sharing, i'll report back on how it goes as i move in the direction of the c/p/f targets above. i didn't see any other threads about this topic but is anyone else familiar with this concept and/or eating this way?

^^^ well at least it's accurate! dr. oz's quiz is really so short it could be hard to come to any conclusions. that book has a way more in depth assessment so i want to confer with that to see what i truly am because i could be the combined type but i doubt it. i feel really hopeful this might be a good direction for me nutritionally.

I'll be interested to hear how it works. I took the quiz but what I found difficult is that it asked are you (1) talkative and outgoing (2) anxious and something, (3) nervous organized and something. I am all three of those. Outside I'm talkative
and outgoing, but when I'm thinking about my bills I'm anxious, etc. and that's not situational, I'm anxious like that all the time. So I dunno.

Apparently mine is a high protein diet. Which I know works for me for losing weight. My regular diet is mostly carbs though.

When they ask questions like that, i am sure it's natural for many people to be introverted in some situations, but extroverted in others.
I am extroverted when around certain friends and family, but overall, I am introverted. I am most comfy around people I know, nd prefer to be at home.

I think they want you to think of the state that you more enjoy, etc. It's natural for me to have some kind of anxiety about some things, so I usually answer that I am an anxious person.

If you answered mostly C's, you have a Type C metabolism! You crave both sweet and salty foods because your body has the ability to utilize protein, fats and carbohydrates equally. Your diet should be approximately 33% protein, 33% fats and 33% carbs.

Which is true, I'm always craving salty and sweet foods. Actually, I'm hungry right now and could go with.something a little salty.

Time to go eat my pasta lunch!

yeah the dr. oz quiz is limited but the one in the other book is more in-depth. for example, i saw questions about dessert preferences cakes and pies, something else and cheesecakes. i really am not a cheesecake person. it's really my last choice but i love a cupcake. i'm guessing that's more of a carb type answer. it also asks about how your respond to fruit salads and what type of birthday meal you prefer. so, i can't wait to get that book to confirm something i hadn't considered until recently which is i'm more carb efficient.

i also think the workout aspect is interesting. it suggests my workouts should be mostly cardio (75%) and less strength training (25%). i love cycle and have gotten really into zumba so it's all coming together and making sense.

another coincidence (or maybe not) is that i'm type a blood type and years ago i read a book called eat right for your blood type. it encouraged my blood type to eat almost identical to what is prescribed in the metabolic type way of eating. lots of healthy veggies, fruit and good carbs, small quantities of "lighter" proteins. and i can't deny, my digestive issues really improved since i stopped eating meats and heavy diary. i'm hoping some additional tweaks will allow me to peel off some more pounds!

According to this I lean towards type b but thats only cuz I got 2 of them and one of everything else.

The questions aren't that accurate though, the thing I struggle with most is fatigue, but I am not anxious at all so I didn't choose that one. I think I lean more towards type C (based on these questions) but I'd be interested to read more.

^^^ yeah the dr. oz quiz and discussion on the show was just the spark i needed to investigate further. it really is making quite a bit of sense to me. i wish there were more current books than the two i found (from 2002) though.

Just fyi, that book is a scam. There's basically no evidence to support its claims. If its advice happens to help you, it's a coincidence.

where did you see that "eat right for your type" is a scam? i don't want to debate with you on it, i'm just curious on your source.

i agree that modifying your balance of c/p/f is "all it takes" but for me i hadn't thought to shift my carbs into the 60-70% range until seeing the segment on the show.

as i mentioned a few times in the thread, the dr. oz quiz is limited and just really helped me want to dig deeper.

glad you already know what's best for you but i can say for me the "trial and error" part of figuring out what is best for me hasn't been easy and my weight hasn't come off as i would have expected so having another point of view to consider is helpful. i was sharing here because there may be others who are not sure where they fall on the spectrum and it might be worth investigating metabolic types.

my weight is down (about 7-8 lbs) since i've been paying attention to this. i don't have any stomach discomfort or digestion issues now. i feel good and also my skin is clearer!

now, i have been doing lots of zumba lately too burning 700+ calories when i teach but i definitely think my diet is a factor. i haven't done anything to an exact science but i eat veggies, rice and fruits without worrying. i eat seafood but hardly any cheese now and no dairy. i drink lots of tea and alkaline water. i snack on popcorn, tortilla chips & hummus and still have dark chocolate when i want. for an ice cream like treat i have frozen kefir (lifeway brand). my cravings are definitely better. i don't feel like i want to eat as much and i don't crave the bad stuff. hummus is a good sub for cheese when i eat it with tortilla chips.

just wanted to update y'all on my results since learning about this way of eating and changing my eating patterns based on my type. i'm feeling good. i definitely think being more open to good carbs has helped me.

According to the quiz I'm a combo of Type A and Type B. I eat very much like the Type A recommendations. If I ate the amount of carbs for Type B I would be the size of a barn and/or have diabetes. : )
