So, our downstairs neighbor has elaborate RC aircraft--I've seen a plane and a helicopter so far. The plane is equipped with a camera, and he wears goggles as he flies it to see what the plane sees. Today, he was out with the helicopter--he had the goggles on his head, but not down over his eyes, so I assume it is outfitted with a camera as well. I was wigged out by the plane the other day, but I'm definitely wigged out by the helicopter, as it has the ability to hover. Today he brought it up to the level of my windows, but not near my windows. I don't know what kind of camera these things have, but I'm EXTREMELY uncomfortable with this. He wasn't close to my window, but like I said, I don't know what kind of camera is mounted on the aircraft and what kind of zoom capability it has. My bedroom sliding door is on that side, and I often just leave the blinds open when sleeping and changing since we are on the 3rd floor. He could easily fly that thing up to my window at any time if he wanted to.

We don't know these people--they moved into their unit shortly before we moved into ours. I do know that he is an engineer and has his apartment surrounded with security cameras, which, for our neighborhood, is peculiar. They're the best neighbors I've ever had--can't ever even tell they're home, except can hear their newborn crying through the floor at times.

Am I overreacting? What would you do...if anything?

I would make a sign and put it in that window that says something like:

Stop peeping in my window with your RC aircraft or I will call the police.

or, how about:

Stop peeping in my window with your RC aircraft or I will shoot it down with my gun.

If he sees it, then he'll know you're on to him and he'll hopefully stop, or look for another victim. If he can't see it, then it doesn't matter. Win/Win, right?
I do want to make sure that you know somebody can scale the side of your building and get on your deck in seconds. We lived on the third floor and my mom used to leave the slider open. A friend showed her bow easy they could climb onto our balcony.

Just fyi.

They'd have to use a ladder, which would call attention to them. Our building is very unique. There is very little privacy from any direction--it has its pros and cons, but one pro is an additional layer of security. And, at night, I always keep the slider locked but the blinds open occasionally.

Bottom line, a person could pick my door locks, break my windows, kick my door in, ambush me downstairs, etc. if they really wanted to get at me. But thanks, though. I'm usually pretty anal about security, but this building is just not conducive to those kinds of break-ins. There are some single ladies who live here and they're very comfortable.

I'm mostly wondering if I'm overreacting to this situation. I want to take a more legal, more official route if there is one.

I'm not easily creeped out but that gives me a tiny bit of the creeps.
There are cameras everywhere these days. Nearly every person has a camera phone, traffic cams, security cams, etc, etc. There's very little privacy in the world.
But our own homes should be <curse word here> off limits. Period.
I would do as RCW suggested. Make it big, make it visible. Put it up as soon as you hear him out playing with his little toys. If his aircraft comes no where near your window, he won't see it and no harm no foul. If it does come near your window, he will know not to do it again (hopefully).

I'm pretty sure you can call the police (non-emergency) for advice, without asking them to intervene. They might be able to give you some insight regarding how worried you should be, and even whether this guy is doing something illegal. They could also give you tips on how to approach him if that's what you want to do.
Personally, I don't think you're overreacting - even if this person has good intentions, his behavior is inconsiderate at best.

Good luck and stay safe!

That's my next step. Right now, I'm waiting to hear back from the Association of Model Aeronautics to find out what the rules are governing flying RC aircraft in this area and hear what they have to say about one likely equipped with cameras.

I don't want to involve the property management if unnecessary. They're pretty hands-off about rule and law enforcement. I anticipate they'll just be another source of frustration for me. This guy should know better. He's got to be pretty deeply entrenched into the hobby, because these are elaborate, expensive aircraft, with blinking lights, goggles, cameras.

If you don't want to confront him, you can put a privacy film over your windows so you can see out but no one can see it.

It sucks that you have to do anything, but I just wanted to offer up that option

Like I said, he should already know better. He's old enough and he's intelligent enough.

No way am I blocking my view or spending a dime because someone else is a douchebag--not until I know I have no other option, but thanks for the idea, scrills!

He's not flying it on the property. He's across the street. The camera may have a zoom lens or he may be able to record and then zoom the images. It's also near a busy street, and I'm fairly certain that's not legal. The last idiot crashed his RC plane on our roof. Could have crashed it in traffic and caused an accident. The really stupid thing is that there is a model plane field not far from here, or he could walk a little further--maybe 1/8 mi--and be away from traffic and residences.

Besides, as if he's going to listen to me just because I don't like it. I need legal backup first.

How different would this be from just walking by someone's living room window and glancing in if they lived on the first floor?

IDK. I just tend to keep my blinds closed bc I am a tad paranoid.

Creeper! The only reason I could see him flying something with a camera is to see the view. Like a bird's eye nature view. If he's flying in an area where the only real viewpoint is inside your house...Creeper!

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.
I don't think there are a whole lot of restrictions on low-flying aircraft, unless you are near an airport or an important government building. But, it's worth a try to go that route.

I would not confront him directly. People really are nuts, especially in apartment settings.

Extra effort is required to see in one's window that high--that's the difference. That's like asking what would be different about climbing up a ladder and looking in my windows. I shouldn't have to be concerned with someone looking in with a camera on a toy helicopter. That's just all kinds of wrong.

I have a gorgeous view and I'm on the 3rd floor. I'm not keeping my blinds closed because some askhat wants to play with his fancy toys. If there's legal footing, I'm going to kick him with it.

Legally, I ~believe~ the owner of the land owns the airspace up and above the property in a cone shape, up to a certain height, and can restrict activity in that space. But i will have to double check my real estate law books.

Are you sure the helicopter has a camera on it?

If It's legal action you're looking to take, I think there are more informative avenues than NC to get answers to your questions.
