Default Seriously - I like this kind of Christmas gift!

Are you a persnickety person when it comes to gifts you receive for the holidays? I was listening to the radio and I heard someone bashing, OF ALL THINGS, Soap on a Rope! :fuming:fuming.gif I mean, come on, is there any gift more practical? You don't have to worry about the soap falling down in the shower because it's always tethered to the faucet. These were all the rage years ago! I guess if I want one now, I'll have to do a search on "vintage soap" at EBay! Gosh, I think of all those I purchased in the 70's for the men in my life. Poor Daddy, do you think he really hated the soap on a rope?

And why does everyone gotta be hatin' fruitcakes? Am I the only living person who actually likes these? I know that when a fruitcake is bad, it's REALLY bad. But YUM if I get a good one from the nice lady across the street. I don't want a dozen of them but I have to have at least one every season.

Are there things that you enjoy that others just don't seem to appreciate?

I like fruitcake too. A friend of mine sends me one every year from a Texas bakery. It's really good. At first I thought she was trying to tell me something with the fruitcake gift, but now I just chow down happily.

Funny that you bring up soap on a rope. A couple of months ago I was wondering where I could get my hands on some. I had knee surgery and had to use crutches everywhere, even in the shower. If the soap fell out of my hands, I was in trouble. Told my H to get me some soap on a rope and he had a good laugh.

my Scottish great-grandmother owned a bakery in her native Aberdeen.

she had a recipe for fruitcake that would, indeed, make Heaven & Nature Sing!!!!

of course, the fact that you make this in September and then for the next 3 months douse it with liberal amounts of whiskey probably had something to do with it!!!!

my mother still has a copy of this recipe, written out in Granny Annie's spidery long hand when we visited her in Dublin in the spring of 1968. i still remember going to her tiny little apartment for high tea so that the ladies from her church could meet her great-granddaughters from Canada; she had made the entire spread of sandwiches, cookies and a big pink-iced lemon cake herself from scratch!

I don't like fruitcakes, but fortunately no one has ever given me one.

I've heard people say they don't think gift certificates are a good gift, but I would LOVE to get one to a bookstore, museum gift shop or art supply store. No one has ever given me one though. The reason I'd like one is that I rarely give myself permission to buy anything from those types of stores even though I love books, etc.

Also, I'd love to be able to give gift certificates to those types of stores! But I don't know anyone who really shares my passion for reading or art.

For the first time ever, I got TWO for my birthday this year! I love books. My big splurge for myself is buying myself two leather bound books each month. (Well, that and hair!)

Wow, you were lucky!

I love that idea of splurging on high-quality books. Hmm, maybe I'll start with one every three months, though. LOL

Thanks for the inspiration.

I should add that I already have a ridiculous amount of books that I have no room for, yet I can't bring myself to give them away or sell them.

I have two collections-The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written and Books that Changed the World from Easton Press. They send me one book per month, so it's just automatically taken out of my account. They're not that expensive.....as opposed to the Hooray for Hollywood book my mom and I bought my brother!

My mom makes the most heavenly fruitcake.

I love it.

I'm partial to hers but I have liked some fruitcakes we have been given.

I have never tried fruitcake, maybe I will this year..

Holidays around my house is full of greek pastries and stuff, so after eating about 10 pieces of baklava, I can't even look at anything else

I like fruitcake in general, but that is the best way of making it. I've had it made with bourbon and with rum, and I liked both kinds.

People don't seem to give it as gifts as often any more, I guess it's become unfashionable or seen as a joke, but I still occasionally benefit from "Does anyone want this thing?".

My mother is unhappy if she does not get a Claxton Fruitcake at Christmas. No one else in the family can stand it!

My favorite gift is book(s) or a gift certificate/card to a bookstore. Every time I move the movers hate me because I have tons and tons and tons of boxes of books. Can't part with any of them. I re-read some of them; others I'm just really attached to.
