Default favorite natural "stay well" remedies

what does everyone use to stay well or if you get sick, what do you take?

i like oscillo and i recently heard about cold & flu herbal shot by someone in a magazine who swore by it.

i know zinc is supposed to be good for fighting colds and i take a 30 mg zinc supplement for another purpose and honestly, i didn't really get sick last winter now that i think about it.

anyway...just curious.

Homemade fermented kefir water with green tea, nettle tea, ginger, and lemon. It's my daily drink. I never get sick anymore. It keeps my guts moving and my respiratory system free of any infection.

Would you mind sharing your recipe RCW? Over the past few years I've had several respiratory issues, due to allergies. It normally hits in the spring but I'm having horrible delayed allergies this fall.

I've been trying to drink 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar, in a glass of water, every day. It is good for your system and I do feel a positive overall change, when I keep up with it. I can be slack when it comes to taking something every single day, but I'm working on that.

i'm really enjoy kefir. i also try to get in as much ginger as i can in my green drinks. it's delicious! i need to look into nettle tea. i agree good digestion helps keep you feeling good!

Daily doses of yogurt/probiotics, lots of fiber, and lots of exercise (and consequently, sound sleep). I agree that a well-functioning digestive system makes you feel like a million bucks! I had the flu two years ago but apart from that, I can't remember the last time I was sick.

I take a multi, fish oil, vitamin D, vitamin c powder mixed with water and Coq10 daily. I recently bought a "greens" powder mix to up the ante during the winter months!

Getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night is key, too.

If I start to feel unwell, I take echinacea and zinc (Zicam and lozenges). Plus, ginger and garlic (yes, I'll even eat them raw!)

I'd be interested in your recipe also, RCW. I recently began drinking kefir (Lifeway from the grocery store) just to see if I'd like it before I got into making my own. I know the grocery store stuff isn't supposed to be as effective, but I'm already seeing some benefits. And I just found out about the water kefir which I think I'd be more inclined to make since I'd like to get away from dairy.

I take a multi-vitamin, flax seed oil, calcium, and acidophilus daily. If I do feel a cold coming on, I start taking zinc tablets and drink hot ginger tea, and that usually heads it off. I don't get sick often though.

eta: I also drink either green or white tea throughout the day and have been doing so for the past several years. I think that's made a big difference too.

I have hot water with lemon and ginger first thing every in the morning. I also take a multivitamin and probiotic. This helps regulate my digestion. Additionally, along with frequent hand-washing, this has helped keep me virus free.

Increasing sleep and giving myself an hour before bed to relax has helped bring my stress levels down. I still need to work on the regular exercise bit.

I ferment water kefir grains in sugar and a half gallon of water for 2-4 days, then strain the grains out (and use the grains to start the next batch). To the liquid, I add a whole sliced lemon, fresh diced ginger, a dried fig, and some blueberry juice concentrate and let that sit and ferment for another 2-4 days. I then strain out the fruit (I reuse the ginger several times in the next batches, but discard the lemon and fig each time). To that liquid, I add about 4 cups each of green tea and nettle tea. I've then got about a gallon of nutritious drink.

To make nettle tea, I steep dried nettle leaves in boiling water. I usually let it sit for about 24 hours. I make green tea the usual way, with loose tea leaves, just steeping for a few minutes, strain and allow to cool, and add to kefir container.

My kids call me a mad scientist, because I've got a whole counter in my kitchen devoted to fermenting stuff.

I will drink green tea with honey when I have a cold. I will also take zinc.

I wish I were better with doing daily stuff. I really try and I am good for about a week and then I forget. I have tried the cider vinegar/water, daily probiotics etc etc. and I just cannot make anything a habit. WHY??

Frequent hand washing is número uno for me. I haven't caught a cold in years and I've never had the flu despite never getting a flu shot.

I also eat low fat yogurt every day, and drink lots of water.

The only "ailment" I have is allergies about a week a year - a few days in the spring and a few in the fall.

Just remembered something I forgot to add to my list - I use my neti pot faithfully every morning. A few years ago when my springtime allergies were really bad, I became so congested, I couldn't breathe through my nose at all and had to go to the doctor and was given a prescription for Nasonex. I wasn't very happy about having to use it, but, well, I kind of wanted to breath! Until that time, I had only used the neti pot sporadically whenever I thought about it, but in an effort to get off the Nasonex, I began to use my neti pot daily and was able to ditch the prescription.

When any of us start to get a sore throat or the sniffles I cook up a batch of magic syrup. 2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, zest of 2 lemons, and 1 cup grated ginger. Simmer together 15 min. Take off heat and add juice of 2 lemons. Strain and let cool. Add syrup to water or tea and drink every 3-4 hours. 1 part syrup, 4 parts water or tea.

Woke up sick, and have 3 sick babies on my hands all day, 1 of which has a fever. Would I be crazy to give them some de-caf herbal tea...

When you say babies, How old are babies?

I think my mom was giving me hot toddies when I was sick by the time I was 4. But these were the days when nightquil(sp?) had alcohol in it. If they are over a year you can give them hot honey water with lemon.

last night i boiled lemon, ginger, mint, and honey with water. yummy and helped my tummy ache adn my head. I felt like i was coming down with a head cold or something.

I remeber this old chinese lady given my parents chinese tea when I was sick. it taste terrible, but i swear the next day I would always be better. she started giving it to us when I was 5.

3yrs and two 18mth olds. I gave them some straight herbal tea last time they were sick (it was decaf and all natural and even half milk) and they hated it.
3 year old had a sore throat and would do the honey which was great but no sore throat this time just the all around blah's.
I got her to do a steam last time lol. But not longer than about 7 seconds so no luck with that..
